Episode #16 - The Murder of Joanne “Joanie” Burdick
EPISODE SUMMARY:
In 1969, a 16-year-old girl was murdered in an Oakland hotel room, leaving behind a mystery that would remain unsolved for more than five decades. For 57 years, she was known only as Jane Doe. Now, thanks to advances in forensic genealogy and DNA technology, she finally has her name back: Joanne “Joanie” Burdick.
In this episode, we uncover who Joanie was, what happened to her, and how investigators were finally able to identify her after all these years. But while Joanie has her identity back, one question remains: Who took her life—and will her family ever get justice?
SOURCES:
Oakland Police Department / FBI announcement: (nextdoor.com) The primary current source for the identification is the Oakland Police Department’s October 1, 2026 announcement. It confirms Joanie’s identity, her birth date, the hotel location, the approximate timeline, the witness description, the strangulation, Teaford’s status as a potential suspect, the DNA identification and the ongoing investigation.
FBI historical records:(FBI) The FBI’s official records confirm Taylor Morris Teaford was Ten Most Wanted Fugitive #279, added May 10, 1968, and removed May 24, 1972. The FBI states that federal process against him was dismissed in Fresno, California, in 1972.
CBS San Francisco: (CBS News)
San Francisco Chronicle: (San Francisco Chronicle)
SFGATE:(SFGATE) Provides additional reporting on Joanie’s disappearance at age 14, her family’s search, the investigation into Teaford, and current efforts to determine his whereabouts.
Forensic Magazine:(Forensic Magazine) Provides historical context concerning Teaford and the other Bay Area homicide investigators associated with him. Those connections should be presented as investigative theories/suspicions rather than established convictions.
People:(People.com) Provides confirmation of Joanie’s name, age, birth date, identification announcement timing, and familial DNA process.

EPISODE SUMMARY:
In May 2023, the small community of Henryetta, Oklahoma was shaken by the discovery of seven bodies on a rural property — a murder‑suicide carried out by Jesse McFadden, 39, a registered sex offender. McFadden killed his wife, Holly Guess, 35, her three children — Rylee Elizabeth Allen, 17, Michael James Mayo, 15, and Tiffany Dore Guess, 13 — along with two teenage girls who were staying over for a sleepover, Ivy Webster, 14, and Brittany Brewer, 15, before taking his own life. The case exposed deep failures in the supervision of violent offenders, raised urgent questions about investigative gaps, and left families demanding accountability for a system that failed to protect six young people and a mother.

EPISODE SUMMARY:
Faith Hedgepeth, a 19‑year‑old UNC–Chapel Hill student and member of the Haliwa‑Saponi Tribe, was found murdered in her off‑campus apartment on September 7, 2012. Her death sparked one of North Carolina’s longest and most complex homicide investigations, marked by evolving forensic techniques, shifting witness accounts, and years of unanswered questions. In the days that followed, investigators sifted through digital records, collected dozens of forensic samples, and interviewed friends, classmates, and anyone who might help reconstruct Faith’s final hours.
As the case stretched from months into years, new technologies emerged, old evidence was re‑examined, and the timeline was repeatedly scrutinized for overlooked details. Despite the extensive investigative effort, the story of what happened that night remains shaped by gaps, contradictions, and the slow, meticulous process of piecing together a decade‑old mystery.

EPISODE SUMMARY:
This episode covers the shocking 1977 abduction of Colleen Stan, a 20‑year‑old woman held captive for seven years by Cameron and Janice Hooker. Colleen endured extreme confinement, psychological manipulation, and long‑term trauma — including being forced to live in a wooden box under the Hookers’ bed for most of each day. Despite the unimaginable conditions, she survived, escaped, and later helped bring Cameron Hooker to justice. Her case remains one of the most studied examples of coercive control and trauma bonding.
