The San Francisco 49ers (5-3) head into Week 9 facing the New York Giants (2-6) in what could be the most important game of the season thus far. With trade-deadline implications, the NFC West race on the line, and a looming matchup vs the Los Angeles Rams next week, the stakes couldn’t be higher. After the 49ers’ disappointing 26-15 loss to the Houston Texans, where the offense sputtered and the defense got gashed, SF is desperate to bounce back. They’ve added new faces like Keion White and Clelin Ferrell … but the injury list looms large (no Brock Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, Bryce Huff or Jake Brendel). That MetLife turf has haunted them before — so they’ll want to come out clean. On the flip side, the Giants are a mess in 2025. Rookie QB Jaxson Dart is under center after season-ending injuries to Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers. They’ve shown flashes, but they also turn the ball over. Could this be a trap game? Giants defense? Pass rushers like Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Kayvon Thibodeaux are legit — but their run defense allows 5.7 yards per carry and 148 yards per game. That spells opportunity for the 49ers ground game. And what about targeting George Kittle? The Giants’ secondary has been torched all year: high completion rates allowed, poor coverage grades, and matchup issues all over. If San Fran can establish the run and get Kittle involved, they open everything up.

• Why this is arguably the biggest game of the season for the 49ers so far
• Key injury updates + how they impact both teams
• Matchup breakdowns: run game vs run defense, pass rush vs 49ers’ offensive line, how the Giants’ secondary stacks up
