  • The Diva Series feat. Martha Wash
It's been a long time coming but I've finally got around to inducting the dynamic and vocally gifted Martha Wash into the Diva Hall of Fame.  With her drama-filled soprano, Martha came to fame in the late 70s as part of the duo Two Tons O' Fun.  Along with Izora Armstead, the ladies were the backup singers for the other "Queen of Disco" Sylvester.

In 1982, the duo's name changed to The Weather Girls and they went on to record the biggest song of their career "It's Raining Men," a song passed over by Barbara Streisand for her "Wet" album.  To this day, the early 80s disco song is considered iconic and a classic by all standards.

After the duo split in 1985, Martha transitioned into house music and lent her voice to several massive hits by Black Box and C+C Music Factory.  As a solo artist, she continued to rack up several more #1 Billboard club hits like "Give It to You" and "Catch the Light."

She continues to perform today and has had more recent #1 club hits (Keep Your Body Working, I'm Not Coming Down) performing with legendary DJ Tony Moran, the latter taken from her recent solo album "Something Good."

Martha is a legend, an icon. an ally of the gay community, and a true goddess with an amazing voice.  For these reasons and more, Party Favorz honors Miss Martha Wash by inducting her into the Diva Hall of Fame.  XOXOXO

  • Top Dance Songs of 2014 Vol. 4
We have finally arrived at the fourth and final volume of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2014 and this one is a whopper!  This final set focuses on the year’s best house music.  From this summer’s massive feel-good Jubel by Klingande to Duke Dumont’s back to the 90s I Got U, this has been a very good year for house music.  From the meteoric rise of Disclosure (F For You, Latch) to the impressive debut by Canada’s Kieza (Hideaway), house music and all of its sub-genres (deep house, nu disco, indie dance) have exploded into our mainstream consciousness for the first time in well over a decade.  Frankly, it’s about time folks come around to what we house-heads have known all along; HOUSE MUSIC RULES!

We are starting to close in on the year, but I can assure you Party Favorz ain’t taking no vaca just yet.  HELL NO I won’t GO until I get everybody up on their feet and shaking their ass into the new year.  Have I got some more tricks up my sleeves?  You betcha.

Stay Tuned and as always …ENJOY!

  • Top Dance Songs of 2014 Vol. 3
Probably the single most important aspect of EDM in 2014 is the DJ.  In general, DJs are more than what their title implies.  They are also, producers and artists in their own right.  While many get their satisfaction by spinning in local clubs, a good many more regenerate and/or reinvigorate other musicians' music by adding their own stamp to the original production.  Thank the EDM gods for bootlegs because, without them, the whole scene would be one giant cookie-cutter factory and frankly, I wouldn’t be wasting my breath here and now.

Then there are the actual EDM masters who not only re-work others' music but produce their own original dance works and embark on these massive tours that resemble a rock concert complete with pyrotechnics and imagery that rivals even Madonna’s tour spectacles.  While most manage to etch out a decent living, it’s these masters at their craft that have gone on to become mega-million-generating entities in and of themselves.  Tiesto (which these days is all about branding and ghost producers), Angello + Ingrosso (formerly Swedish House Mafia less one), Avicii, Calvin Harris, and even a douche like Deadmau5 (whose gimmicky glowing mouse-head is still a money-factory) are part of a growing elite whose influence in the industry has the almighty major labels courting them.

In some instances, the major labels have sought out young promising talent and turned them into superstars.  Zedd is a perfect example of this.  Busting out strong in 2013, he continued his influence this year with his signature sound that even he is trying to break away from.  Based on some early tweets, look for something fresh and new from him in 2015.  I for one am looking forward to seeing what he has up his sleeves.

Newcomer Martin Garrix exploded this year with his EDM blockbuster Animals.  Duke Dumont lead the 90s house music revival with I Got U.  The Chainsmokers exploded with #Selfie and are now the in-demand producers for a lot of commercial artists not to mention producing originals like Kanye (another hit from the year).

Then you’ve got Norwegian producer Cosmic Dawn whose sanitized EDM-pop remixes appeal to a broader audience.  There’s no doubt this guy (much like Calvin Harris) manufactures ear candy for the masses and has carved out their own niche in this ever-growing pie.  Despite a recent critique of mine about a song Bjorn (CD) remixed, it was aimed more at the actual song by a self-entitled princess than it was at him.  He weighed in and defended his choice but did it with class.  I just want to reciprocate by saying I have nothing but respect for him and his work and look forward to hearing more from him in 2015.

Last year’s DJ Laszlo and Danny Verde came charging into 2014, but by the second half, their output has been considerably more restrained.  I can only assume their mass popularity has them busy hopping around the globe limiting their time for new productions.  No sweat there, I’m certain they know where the money’s at and what pays the bills LOL.  Still, I look forward to some new tunes from them this coming year as well.

I’ve also been pouring over my list of DJs to look out for in 2015 and this year I’m gonna prop up Guy Scheiman.  Guy has already landed three of the top Billboard mixes this year and is likely on to bigger and better things this next year.

  • Top Dance Songs of 2014 Vol. 2
I’m back with the 2nd installment of the Top Dance Songs of the Year 2014 our annual wrap-up.  Overall, this year felt a bit restrained as far as EDM is concerned.  Sure we had our fun obligatory dance-craze song #Selfie by the Chainsmokers.  Previous year's winners were Eat Sleep Rave Repeat by Fatboy Slim, Gangnam Style by PSY, and Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce, you get the picture.  No harm no foul, these songs were a great deal of fun.  Even Idina Menzel’s (Broadway, Glee) Let It Go (taken from the massive Disney movie Frozen) was a HUGE hit and one song that I still can’t digest LOL.

What we didn’t have were big-name releases by veterans like Rihanna or Madonna much less any of the other hefty members of the industry.  This was not necessarily a bad thing since B and Katy’s 2013 late-year releases carried through much of 2014.  This allowed newcomer Kiesza to shine with her debut Hideaway.  Equally, the trash-talking Azealia Banks finally dropped her album to critical acclaim.  Fortunate for her Chasing Time is an excellent song and overall reviews are positive, otherwise, the media would have strung her up on a cross and let her slowly bleed.

In 2014, we also celebrated the booty like no other time I can recall since Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back from the early 90s.  Newcomer Meghan Trainer’s All About the Bass, with its signature 60s throwback beat, was a massive hit.  Niki Minaj’s Anaconda and Jennifer Lopez with Iggy Azalea's Booty were equally popular, allowing everyone to celebrate the big juicy peach.  Not to be outdone, Kim Kardashian took it to the highest of highs gracing the cover of Papermag (which I've never heard of until now) and showcasing her massive greasy, Botox, Photoshopped, unnatural, and unrealistic cartoon size derrière.  At this point, I think we’ve all just about had all the ass we can handle.  Yes, leave it to Kim’s self-aggrandizing to leave us with an empty pit in our stomachs.

To be certain, it was a great year for Beyonce whose unannounced album drop at the end of 2013 was one of the most commercially and critically accepted releases of the year.  Equally, Ariana Grande came out from seemingly nowhere and proved herself as a viable (yes the girl can freaking sing) and appealing pop artist.  Let’s face it, the problem was in our faces all summer long.  I am still reeling from listening to Dirty Pop with Lance Bass (N’SYNC) and company who gave the song a thumbs down and questioned why she would be coupled with Iggy Azalea (another winner this year).  They thought the song wasn’t catchy and too gritty for this teen-pop princess.  That was the first time I heard the song on the radio and found myself screaming at my car radio when he was reviewing the song.  I was like WTF?  Just because you were in a wildly popular boy band from the 90s doesn’t exactly give you the expertise to understand popular music now.  Don’t get me wrong, I love his show but he should leave the song reviews (which they do every Friday) to those with a little more understanding with what’s happening now, not yesteryear LOL.

I’m gonna jump down from my soap-box and let you folks be the judge.  We still have two more sets to go.  I’ve also got a HUGE surprise that will go up shortly and another by the end of the week.  Make sure to keep an eye on Party Favorz, our Facebook pag...

  • Top Dance Songs of 2014 Vol. 1
It’s that time of year when Party Favorz combs through and compiles the best EDM tracks of the year for our annual Top Dance Songs of the Year series.  2014 has been a year of transition for electronic music.  While the independent and major labels keep churning out those BIG ROOM anthems hoping to score a crossover hit from the clubs to radio, I couldn’t help but sit back and yawn.  That’s not to say there is no room for these anthems, because there is.  But, when I’m putting together the tracklist for a new set and almost half of the songs are big anthems (you know the ones with the build-up and then drop, only to climax) something had to give.

Fortunately, not everyone put all of their eggs in the same basket.  After last year’s successful Daft Punk comeback, we have seen a resurgence in disco (currently called NuDisco…whatever) and House music (Deep House but still House whatever you want to label it).  Duke Dumont lead the charge this year with the Whitney Houston-inspired “I Got You” followed by Disclosure, Gorgan City, SecondCity, and Clean Bandit.  I also might add that these are ALL UK acts.  Call it the second, third, fourth, or even fifth British invasion if you want, but I wholeheartedly welcome it.

Typically, I post about four sets of commercial electro-pop-house tracks but this year, I’ve limited it to only three.  To be certain, these are collectively some of the biggest tunes you were dancing to at your local club, not necessarily at some crazed festival (that’s another beast unto itself).  I compile these using a method that’s one-third chart-based (Billboard), one-third YouTube and SoundCloud user reaction-based, and one-third my personal preference; the latter having the strongest impact of the three.  If I just went by the charts, the overall set would be pretty much shit and wouldn’t even come close to reflecting the most memorable songs of 2014.  That’s not to say there aren’t some lame ducks in here because there are.  I was willing to sacrifice a number one hit whose chart position was pretty much bought and paid for, for at least two of my picks LOL.  I think it’s a fair trade-off.

The fourth set in the Top Dance Songs of the Year series is one long House Music set.  That one was particularly difficult to compile because of all the outstanding music that came out this year in its various sub-genres.  You can expect that to drop in a couple of weeks.

I’ll be back on Friday with volume two.  Until then …ENJOY!

  • Barbara Tucker | The Diva Series | Redux
In 2008, after having successfully created multiple feature sets for friends that included Everything But The Girl, Madonna, Kristine W, Christina Aguilera, and even Sara McLachlan, I began to realize folks were really digging them and then came up with the idea for the Diva Series.  I was steeped in house music at the time doing my 90's re-education and quickly became enamored with Barbara Tucker.  If there is a queen of pop and a queen of disco then Ms. Tucker who holds the most #1 house hits is definitively considered the queen of house music.

Whether she’s singing originals or paying homage to Aretha or Whitney, she does it with ease and a heaping serving of Soul.  I decided it was time and go back and put together a proper tribute for Ms. Tucker that reflects all of her then and more recent hits and even played Barbie and provided her with a proper dress that better suited her skin color.  That red was not working for me but the chartreuse, which better matched her skin color looks fabulous!

Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in 8 years, please welcome back into the Diva Hall of Fame, the one and only Queen of House ….Ms. Barbara Tucker!

  • Get Up n’ Dance | Millennial House Music Classics v4
You might have been asking yourself “whatever happened to the rest of those Millennial House Classics he had been promising?”  Seriously dude, WTF?  Well, that question has been answered because I’m laying down the fourth installment.  These have all been in the can for some time now, but I had decided to space them out so I could get newer sets uploaded.

We got two more after this, so you can definitely expect those before November closes.

I’m not going to bother going into how good this is, because if you don’t know half of these songs, then this likely isn't your bag.  For those that do, this IS THE SHIT!

Keeps your eyes on Party Favorz for the rest of the month, because I’m going to be relentless.
