  • Whitney Houston Tribute [1963 – 2012]

By request, this is a re-post of the original Diva Series featuring the one and only Whitney Houston. Sadly, she was taken from us 3 years after this was posted. RIP my angel.

…I also went back and took a look at this mix and decided to create several mix show edits of the songs.

Let’s face it, anyone who already has most if not all of these mixes knows just how ridiculously long many of them are.  Often the big-name DJs would go off in some direction that had little or nothing to do with the song.  I suppose it was a way to showcase their skills.  Personally, I think it was an ego trip.  That’s not to say that these mixes are not brilliant, because they are.

My goal was to go back and provide more cohesiveness to the listener.  As far as I’m concerned, if you forget what song you're listening to about halfway through because it jets off to some alternate universe, then it’s ripe for re-editing.  Probably the most difficult of these songs is Jonathan Peters’ productions.  They weren't only excessive but used a different timing to the beats making it a challenge for anyone attempting to give his mixes a good flow.  For the most part, I did the best I could and I think the end result is fantastic, if not stellar.

Given the controversy that has surrounded Whitney over the past years, I’m glad to see she’s back, looking and sounding great (despite what some of the critics might be saying about her vocals, which is typical for a bunch of talentless hacks who think Miley Cyrus is the second coming).  Let’s face it, she can still sing rings around anyone in the top 40 at any given moment, including Mariah.  I understand no one was happy with “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” as the possible first single and rightfully so.  It’s a typical Diane Warren schlock-fest that wouldn't be out-of-place as the next American Idol’s first single.  What’s good about that kind of song is that it usually lends itself to great remixes.  IDKMOS is very diva, very over the top and represents the syrupy melodramatic sentiment that every budding drag queen wants to showcase their best Whitney impersonation with.  Hopefully, we’ll be seeing some official remixes (Hex, I can see your name all over this) prior to the release of the album in September.

Ultimately, Whitney’s induction into the Diva Series Hall of Fame serves as a reminder as to why we fell in love with her in the first place.  Her beauty, her voice, her class, and her fierceness…it’s all here.  Welcome back Whitney!

  • Mariah Carey 2009 | The Diva Series
Possibly the one person who is compared more often than not to Whitney Houston is Mariah Carey.  Breaking onto the scene in the early nineties, her debut album spawned four #1 hits and there was no stopping her after that.  Well, there was that little hiccup after leaving Sony/Columbia for Virgin for a very lucrative financial deal.  Hey, you can’t be perfect all the time and in the end, they paid out her contract and let her go.  As the Emancipation of Mimi later proved, it was their loss.

Much has been made about Mariah re-recording her vocals only for David Morales, her preferred DJ.  No doubt he has been an important part of transferring her big voice to the dance floors across the world.  After going back and listening to a lot of these mixes, I can pretty much bet you she also re-recorded the vocals for the boys of C+C Music Factory as well as Junior Vasquez.  All you have to do is go back and listen to the full-length originals of Anytime You Need a Friend or Heartbreaker which were more characteristic of David Morales mixes with the big gospel choirs, the prolonged mid-sections that sound like you’ve just been worked over for several hours on Sunday at your local black Baptist church.  It’s not likely these were outtakes from the original recording sessions and once you get Mariah in front of that gospel choir, the girl just tears it up!

I have personally been less than impressed with her most recent work starting with last year's E=MC² where many of the songs sound like they should be sung by some 21-year-old pop tart as opposed to a true diva with the vocal ability bestowed on her by the gods.  If she thinks she needs to keep up with the kiddies, she doesn’t.  That was proven by last year's Leona Lewis whose debut album was a worldwide smash and was much more sophisticated and mature in its overall tone.  She stands to possibly dethrone the current reigning queen if she’s not careful.  Girlfriend, watch your back.

Regardless, the songs contained in this 2+ hours of non-stop house music are a true testament to Mariah’s incredible abilities.  It’s for this reason that Party Favorz honors Miss Carey with her induction into the Diva Hall of Fame.  Ladies and gentlemen…Mariah Carey!

  • Kristine W | The Diva Series

This is a re-post of Kristine W's original induction into the Diva Hall of Fame from 2011.  Also, I went ahead and re-published an interview I did with her on June 1, 2009.  At the time, you’ll notice her response to marriage equality was a bit flippant if not dismissive based on her own past experience.

Given the recent exchange with Perez Hilton and Carrie Prejean the Miss California contestant for Miss America (marriage should be between one man and one woman argument), I thought re-phrasing the question in light of her past association with the pageant would be appropriate.

Since this interview was conducted in written communication and took a long time for response, I did not submit any follow-up questions for clarification.  Nevertheless, to be on the wrong side of an issue when your entire career is based on the loyal devotion from the gay community, I think it would have been entirely appropriate to pursue this line of questioning. Sadly, I didn’t have the balls nor was I wanting to put her in a position of having to defend something she likely wasn’t well informed on.

Subsequently, her position evolved as she became more aware of the issue and it’s importance to gay families and even joined the NOH8 campaign.  Could it be that it was because she recognized her faux pas or was it just a way to deflect her recent comments in the interview? We’ll never know but I don’t doubt her sincerity.

Hello Kristine, my name is Keith W. from the Party Favorz blog.  Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule for this interview.  I have compiled a list of questions that I would like to ask you and several more from your fans.  So, let’s get this started.

PF: First, I’d like to know how it is that a former Miss Washington goes on to become the toast of Las Vegas and now the ultimate diva of dance and the darling of the gay community. In other words, at what point in your life did you decide this is really what you wanted to do?

KW: Hi Keith: I worked my tail off doing thousands of shows 6 nights a week on various stages in Vegas and around the globe to pay my rent. Opportunities came my way while I out there grinding it out show by show. It is very hard work. I have always known I wanted to be a  working musician, songwriter performer. I am the fourth generation of performers in my family.

PF: In 1996, my ex and I were about to go on a much-needed vacation to the Bahamas. Prior to leaving, I had just received my latest issue of OUT magazine. In it was a review of “Land of the Living” which praised your work but stopped short of calling you “the second coming”. With that kind of send-up, I was definitely intrigued and decided to pursue it once we got back from the trip. Fortunately, when we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale a week later, we decided at the last minute to rent a car and drive down to Key West. It was there that I saw the video of “One More Try” in a local bar and about wet myself. The next morning, I woke up and found the nearest record store (remember those) and bought the last CD they had in stock of “Land of the Living”. Once we got back home, I played your album over and over and for every friend that came to visit. I think I must have converted about 20 or 30 people in six months. To this day, “Land of the Living” is my favorite dance album and in fact, is in my top ten favorite albums of all time. After listening to it in the car the other day, I have to say it still holds up very well. I guess my question to you is, were you disappointed by the fact that it wasn’t as big a hit as your fans feel it should have been? Clearly,

  • Annie Lennox | The Diva Series
Legendary singer Annie Lennox sat down with HX's Trenton Straube for a little pre-album release heart-to-heart. Before the girls ended their chat, Trent had one last, pressing question:

You know I adore Annie, but I thought this was a little off-putting. After all, this comes from a woman who catapulted the whole gender identity issue into the mainstream and has undergone a series of personality changes with each subsequent album release. Vacuous indeed, but that's what we love about you! When I was a kid my mom used to beat down my door while I blasted my stereo to the Pretenders and Eurythmics yelling "turn that shit down" all the while I was happily bouncing around my room like a wild child. I'm sure she thought I was on drugs. Frankly, you don't need to be on anything to enjoy your favorite artist on the dancefloor. Dance remixes are not void of intelligence or expression. Instead, think of them as an extension of enjoying an artist's work you want to dance to in the clubs. Maybe it's the age factor that prevents her from understanding the value of her work remixed for the same audience and extends itself to reach even more. There is a definite value that even her label boss and friend Clive Davis understood. It's a shame she can't see the magic in this artistry.

TS: One last subject: dance mixes. Your music has always been a staple on the dance floor. And you have remixes already slated for the single "Sing." You said you collaborate with art directors. Do you also work with the DJs and producers on the remixes?
AL: I'm going to be brutally honest here. I find a lot of it totally vacuous. People say you've got to have taken a lot of drugs before you "get it." I'm pretty sure that you have to take a lot of drugs. What kind of drugs are you gay guys taking? Would you like that list alphabetically or in order of appearance?

Oh well. Annie, we love you anyway!

  • Annie Lennox | The Diva Series
I just received some last-minute songs for the Chrome Edition and decided to push that off until next week. I'm guessing there will be about five maybe six mixes for that set, so I'll most likely start rolling them out on Monday or so. In the meantime, I received a suggestion to add Annie to the Diva Series, which I thought was a wonderful idea. I had forgotten that she recently released her greatest hits; probably because I had long since created my own best of with the songs I wanted. Anyway, I knocked this one out fairly quickly and am very pleased as will most Annie fans. While doing some research I came across this interview she did for Queerty that I thought was interesting. In particular, her response to the last question gave me pause:

  • Pet Shop Boys Tribute Dance Mix Volumes I & II

With the recent release of Pet Shops Boys' latest single “Love etc.” and the highly anticipated “Yes” album to be released on March 23rd (in the U.K. only, U.S. will follow later this year), I decided it was time to dig out a mega-mix I put together in 2007 for Rick, the ultimate ‘petheads’.  For whatever reason, I never shared it with the site, but I popped this sucker in while he was cooking our night's dinner to be served with a movie and a few cocktails.
Frankly, I forgot just how good this mix is.  All I could remember is what a bitch it was to put together.  After all, vastly different BPMs, different decades, and different styles often without an intro/outro to the mixes, didn’t make for club-friendly mixing (hence the reason why so many “Hot Tracks” and “Razormaid” mixes were used due to their club readiness).  I also checked out our good friend Raj over at Electroqueer, whose post “My Life in the Pet Shop Boys” is a fun read on his thoughts about what PSB means to him.  He also includes his top ten all-time favorite PSB albums.  Check it out for a quick trip down memory lane.
I’m sure everyone has their stories about where they were, what they were doing or even their first gay kiss while listening to the boys.  I’m not sure where I read this, but several years ago I came across an article about ten ways to tell if your boyfriend is gay.  One of the things on the list is if his CD collection had Madonna’s “Immaculate Collection”, Erasure’s “Pop! 20 Hits” or the Pet Shop Boys' “Discography: The Complete Singles Collection”.
Granted, he could just say that it belonged to his little sister, but try explaining all three (which is the most likely scenario for any self-respecting card-carrying homosexual from the eighties and nineties) LOL.  While there has never been a shortage of PSB mega-mixes, I think you’ll find these two mixes cover a broader range of favorites as well as the hits from the 80s forward.  I hope you like this as much as Rick and I did while bouncing off the walls last night.
    ENJOY!

  • Pet Shop Boys Tribute

With the recent release of Pet Shops Boys latest single “Love etc.” and the highly anticipated “Yes” album to be released on March 23rd (in the U.K. only, U.S. will follow later this year), I decided it was time to dig out a mega-mix I put together in 2007 for Rick, the ultimate ‘pethead’.  For whatever reason, I never shared it with the site, but I popped this sucker in while he was cooking our nights dinner to be served with a movie and a few cocktails.
Frankly, I forgot just how good this mix is.  All I could remember is what a bitch it was to put together.  After all, vastly different BPMs, different decades, different styles often without an intro/outro to the mixes, didn’t make for club-friendly mixing (hence the reason why so many “Hot Tracks” and “Razormaid” mixes were used due to their club readiness).
20 Hits” or the Pet Shop Boys “Discography: The Complete Singles Collection”.
Granted, he could just say that it belonged to his little sister, but try explaining all three (which is the most likely scenario for any self-respecting card-carrying homosexual from the eighties and nineties) LOL.  While there has never been a shortage of PSB mega-mixes, I think you’ll find these two mixes cover a broader range of favorites as well as the hits from the 80's forward.  I hope you like this as much as Rick and I did while bouncing off the walls last night.
    ENJOY!
