In this long overdue and long-awaited episode, Joey breaks down what happened at the MLB Trade Deadline at the beginning of this month. He starts out with the Washington Nationals’ blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres, sending superstar outfielder Juan Soto and first baseman Josh Bell to the Padres for an absolute haul of young players and prospects. Joey explains why he is a fan of the deal for both teams and goes over each player and their statistics from 2022. In addition to that, Joey talks about the other biggest deals, including Luis Castillo being traded to the Mariners for prospects, Frankie Montas being sent to the Yankees, and Christian Vazquez being dealt to the Astros. Joey breaks down every move the Sox made and gives insight into what the Sox gave up/received in return. After that, Joey gives his winners and losers for the MLB Trade Deadline with the Padres as a big winner and the Red Sox headlined as a loser after not ripping up the team.

Joey starts this quick episode by talking about the Red Sox’s 9-3 loss to the Blue Jays from last night and mentioning the absence of Tommy Pham, Xander Bogaerts and Christian Arroyo causing Bobby Dalbec to make his first Major League start at shortstop tonight. Joey rattles off the Sox lineup which includes Dalbec at shortstop and Kiké Hernandez at second base (0:27). The Sox currently stand 7 games out of the last wild card spot in the American League. He previews Brayan Bello’s first start since July 24th, which was also against Toronto (3:37).

He breaks down the 2023 MLB schedule which was released today (5:33). During this segment, Joey highlights the Red Sox schedule for next season and which National League opponents they play at home and which they will play on the road (6:37).

Joey outlines how many times each club will play their divisional foes, along with how many games each team will play against interleague rivals and interleague opponents (7:29). This is the first time ever that every Major League club will face each other in the same season. Joey also points out that all 30 clubs will be playing on Opening Day (March 30th, 2023), Jackie Robinson Day (April 15th), Lou Gehrig Day (June 2nd), July 4th, Roberto Clemente Day (September 15th) and on October 1st (Game 162).

At the end, Joey dives back into the World Baseball Classic and updates listeners on the USA’s coaching staff being announced and the addition of Orioles star Cedric Mullins to the lineup (13:30). Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will be the hitting coach, while former Yankees ace Andy Pettite will be the pitching coach.

In this episode, Joey breaks down all of today’s biggest news in the world of sports, from Kevin Durant’s decision to stay in Brooklyn, all the way to Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno announcing that he will explore selling the franchise after 20 years as owner. He begins with the report that Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant will stay and remove his trade request after meeting with owner Joe Tsai, head coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks in Los Angeles (0:36). Joey mentions Brooklyn’s deep returning roster and goes over their entire depth chart and projected starting five (1:45). After that, he moves onto legendary college football coach Nick Saban’s new 8-year, $93.6 million dollar extension (6:33) and points out that he is now the highest paid coach in all of NCAA football, ahead of Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

Then, he transitions to the Major Leagues and Albert Pujols’ historic last week, including his 14th home run of the season coming last night against the Cubs (9:52). He touches on Cardinals pitcher Jordan Montgomery’s dominant 4 starts with St. Louis since being traded from the Yankees at the trade deadline (13:12).

Following that, Joey breaks down the news of Angels owner Arte Moreno shopping the franchise after 20 years of owning it since he bought the club for $184 million in 2003 (18:06). The Angels are now worth over $2.2 billion but have continued to struggle, only making the playoffs once since their last playoff series win in 2009 (19:55-22:47). Joey goes on a rant about Moreno’s poor tenure as owner and his failure to win, despite having two of the greatest generational talents that the game has ever seen in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani (19:04) (32:02-40:56). He analyzes the Angels payroll (25:23) and details the catastrophe of 36% of their season payroll going to 3B Anthony Rendon and OF Justin Upton with Rendon only playing 45 games (26:14) and Upton not even playing in one before his release (27:26). Joey provides a full breakdown on the Angels history (32:25) and why the team became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005 in an effort to market the team as a Southern California franchise. With the team up for sale, Joey makes a case for Clippers owner Steve Ballmer to become the next Angels owner (40:56) and details why he believes Ballmer would be a great fit to turn the franchise around by extending Ohtani and building more talent around the two Angels superstars (43:41-48:23).

At the end, he previews the Red Sox’s next week of games with 9 in a row against teams ahead of them in the American League (48:24). The sports guru Mike Hurley returns to the podcast with his elite expertise and football knowledge to help break down all 32 NFL starting quarterbacks with Joey based on how they think each signal-caller will perform this year. Joey and Mike start out by ranking their top 5 quarterbacks in order from 1 through 5 (2:06-12:27) and (12:28-20:30).

After that, the next tier they discuss is which quarterbacks sit in the 6 through 10 range (20:33-28:10) and then, the 11 through 20 domain (28:11-1:06:00). During that segment of quarterbacks 11-20, they go on a 10-minute rant on Daniel Jones and where Joey has him placed in his rankings (29:19-40:00). During the argument, Joey points out all of Daniel Jones’ improved surroundings: a new offensive coordinator, an offensive-minded head coach with success as a playcaller, and a competent general manager. They debate where Saquon Barkley was drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft and where Daniel Jones was selected in 2019, both of which Joey would do all over again.

Following that, Joey and Mike move down the list and rank their bottom 12 quarterbacks in the 21 through 32 range (1:06:00-1:21:57). At the end, they highlight notable backups and talk about where they would place them in their rankings if they were to play a majority of the season (1:21:57-1:29:25). To close out the episode, Joey and Mike reflect on their overall rankings and which player was the biggest surprise in each of their lists (1:29:25). Joey delivers an instant reaction to the New York Giants’ electric victory over the Cincinnati Bengals and discusses the unreal performances of QB Davis Webb and WR Alex Bachman, two players who rallied the offense down the field in a clutch two-minute drill. He highlights some of the biggest plays of the game, including a 15-yard touchdown reception to Bachman from Webb with under a minute to go, giving the Giants the lead. This was the second week in a row that Webb led the Giants down the field for a game-winning drive.

Joey also talks about how Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones performed in his three offensive series and praises him for his efficient night with 14 completions in 16 attempts for 116 passing yards and an interception on a deflected pass off the hands of rookie tight end Daniel Bellinger, which was not Jones' fault. At the end, he explains why this game just felt different with the energy of the players, the crowd and the entire fanbase celebrating the massive come-from-behind win.

In this episode, Joey breaks down what happened in Game 4 of the Boston Park League Championship at Town Field last night (0:07). The Boston Athletics won the game by a score of 8-2 and evened up the series score to two games apiece (0:50).

A’s outfielder Chris DeGiacomo had a terrific game on the field defensively in center field and at the dish, smoking a 2-run home run in the 5th inning (1:41-4:14). Joey outlines why this Game 4 victory was so important and lists the schedule for the remainder of the series (4:15-5:21)

Joey revisits DeGiacomo’s dominant days for Johns Hopkins (5:22) where he totaled 101 hits with a career .319 batting average, .421 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage. He finished his Blue Jays career on a 10-game hit streak with a .425 batting average over that stretch with a 1.089 OPS, a home run, 2 doubles, a triple, 8 runs scored and 12 runs batted in. He breaks down the Christmas Day matchups, which teams have the most nationally televised games and which teams have the easiest and hardest schedules according to Tankathon.

After that, Joey transitions to the Los Angeles Clippers schedule and dives into how many back-to-backs they have, their longest road trip, their longest homestand and which teams the Clippers will play three times in the Western Conference, rather than four times.
