The Nigerian Police Central Motor Registry (CMR) plays a crucial role in curbing car theft in Nigeria. Inspector Akinloye Adesoji
and Inspector
Bassey Maxwell of the NPF CMR department were our guests on Police Diary to give an insight on how the system works. The
NPF (CMR) is a department responsible for managing vehicle-related affairs in Nigeria. The department handles information about vehicle ownership and other details that will be useful in the investigation of motor vehicle theft and recovery and for enhancing national security. In December, 2023, the Nigeria Police Force officially launched the implementation of the upgraded electronic Central Registry (e-CMR), designed to achieve the following
1. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) database: Maintains a database of vehicle VINs to track and identify stolen vehicles.
2. Vehicle registration and licensing: Ensures proper registration and licensing of vehicles, making it harder for thieves to sell stolen vehicles.
3. Vehicle inspection: Conducts regular inspections to detect and prevent stolen vehicles from being sold or used.
4. Stolen vehicle database: Maintains a database of reported stolen vehicles, enabling swift identification and recovery.
5. Collaboration with other agencies: Works with customs, immigration, and border agencies to prevent stolen vehicles from being exported or imported.
6. Investigation and prosecution: Investigates car theft cases and prosecutes offenders.
7. Public awareness: Educates the public on vehicle security and theft prevention measures.
8. Vehicle marking and etching: Encourages vehicle marking and etching to make vehicles more identifiable.
9. Intelligence gathering: Collects and analyzes intelligence on car theft syndicates and patterns.
10. Recovery and return: Facilitates the recovery and return of stolen vehicles to their rightful owners.
The Nigerian Police Central Motor Registry is playing a vital role in combating car theft and maintaining road safety in Nigeria.
