Nigeria has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the world, with an estimated 72,000 cancer deaths occurring annually ¹ ². The estimated incidence of the five most common types of cancer in Nigeria are: breast cancer (27%), cervix uteri (14%), liver (12%), prostate (12%) and colorectum (4.1%) ¹. While estimated mortality for breastv cancer is (20%), liver (16%), prostate (13%), cervix uteri (12%) and colorectum (4.4%)
Nigeria has approximately 102,000 new cancer cases annually ¹. The age standardized incidence rate for all invasive cancers from the Ibadan Population Based Cancer Registry (IBCR) was 66.4 per 100,000 men and 130.6 per 100,000 women, while in the Abuja Population Based Cancer Registry (ABCR) it was 58.3 per 100,000 for men and 138.6 per 100,000 for women.
