About the project
Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, was Sri Aurobindo’s partner and counterpart in every way. They had the same spiritual realisations and they worked for the same goal; to bring the New Consciousness for mankind. Mother was a true Guru, and a Universal Guru in every way. Her teaching has something for everyone because she taught for human progress on all levels and in all parts of the human being. The clarity and simplicity of her expression communicates something to everyone who reads her books. Her inner work included changing those who came to her; both those who were able to meet her physically and those who could come only in their inner being. Her consciousness was active on the universal subtle planes of creation, and she worked to enlighten thought and life impulse on a universal scale for all of mankind.

Mother established the Sri Aurobindo Ashram after November 24, 1926, when Sri Aurobindo retired to devote all his time to bringing the New Consciousness. She established the Ashram School in 1943, and taught the students French. From 1950 through 1958, in French, she taught them the highest, deepest, most complex spiritual and yogic philosophy and practice in a simple and easily understandable manner. She gave a realistic and practical view of Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy and the practice of his Yoga. These classes were transcribed and published as “Mother’s Questions and Answers”. The present series of Auroville Radio talks on Mother’s Questions and Answers begins on the date of July 12, 1955, because it is the first date of the available sound recordings of Mother teaching the class. Satyavan has told Savitri how much she means to him. Now Savitri tells Satyavan how much she loves him, and how important their marriage is. Hand in hand they return home through the forest, as afternoon turns to evening. They are met along the way by a great resplendent company which has come to bring them all back to their palace in their kingdom. Death has kept his promises. Satyavan’s father’s sight has been restored, and his kingdom has been returned to him. In the light of flaming torches, in a high-roofed chariot, Satyavan and Savitri ride back to the many-voiced human world, hearing a marriage march and nuptial hymn.

As day turns to evening, Savitri awakens lying under a tree. Satyavan is still sleeping in her arms, held close to her breast, just as she held him when he died and Death came to take his soul away. Savitri feels a great change in herself. “A Power dwelt in her soul too great for earth, a bliss lived in her heart too large for heaven. Light too intense for thought and love too boundless for earth’s emotions lit her skies of mind and spread through her deep and happy seas of soul.” When Satyavan awakens, he tells her that he refused to stay in heaven without her, and that together they refused to enter the gates of night. Satyavan can see how Savitri is changed. He tells her that whatever she does, his human earth will still demand her bliss.

Savitri has descended from the higher worlds of consciousness, carrying the soul of her beloved Satyavan in her own soul. The Supreme All-Consciousness told them how the Superman’s presence on earth will bring the Spirit’s presence forward in humanity and in Nature. Savitri has always said that she wants to bring God down to men and to make the earthly life the life Divine. Now the Supreme said that this is exactly what will happen. When the Supreme finished speaking, Savitri lapsed back to earth with Satyavan. She descended faster and faster until she was drawn into a wonder of miraculous depths, a darkness of great wings closed over her, and she was buried in a mother’s breast.

Savitri has come to the end of the long journey which started with Satyavan’s death in the forest. She followed Almighty Death as he led away the soul of Satyavan; all the while claiming her right to live with him on earth. She accomplished the vanquishing of Death. Then she rose to the high Heaven-Worlds, where she asked the Supreme All-Consciousness for their return to earth, and for his help in their Divine work there. Now the Supreme tells Savitri, “Descend to life with him thy heart desires.” He declares the Truth; that they are his dual power of God which he sent forth to uplift earth-beings to immortality, and to bring God down to earth. He says that Satyavan is the soul of man, the godhead growing in human lives, and Savitri is his spirit’s Power, the revealing voice of his immortal Word. There is a greater Truth concealed in God’s beyond. A few high forerunners among men shall be the first-born of a new supernal race.

Now that Savitri has refused every offer and every suggestion made by the Supreme to get her to remain in the higher worlds, he sees that she is ready for him to grant her wish to return to earth with Satyavan and do her divinely destined work. He tells her, “O beautiful body of the incarnate Word, my thoughts are thine, I have spoken with thy voice. What thou hast chosen I choose. All thou hast asked I give to earth and men.” He says he will now do his marvelous works in Savitri, and he tells her, “Thou shalt bear all things that all thing may change, Thou shalt fill all with my splendor and my bliss, Thou shalt met all with thy transmuting soul.”
