  • Jake Evans Senior Associate, Holland & Knight on Business Developers Network
Jake Evans Senior Associate, Holland & Knight on Business Developers Network
    Show Content Notes:
Becoming a lawyer takes hard work. Becoming a successful lawyer is even more challenging.
Law is a business, What most people do not realize is that for most attorneys, they are an independent business, and that is true whether they are sole practitioner or work in small firms, your value to the firm is relative to the revenue you generate for the firm and that is especially when they are working in large firms,
So, what does it take to succeed in law? If your ambition is to become an attorney, what path should you follow? Our guest, and my friend, Jake Evans will share his journey from law school to rising within the ranks of law firms in seven short years to become a senior associate at Holland & Knight, a global law firm with more than 1,300 lawyers.
Welcome Jake to the Business Developers Network broadcasting from Pro Business Channel studios in Buckhead, Atlanta.
Let me provide a brief bio for you so our listeners will get to know you:
Graduated with honors from University of Georgia undergrad and law school
Worked for 3 different law firms before becoming a senior associate at Holland & Knight; which is part of your journey we will learn about.
A senior associate at Holland & Knight representing individuals and corporate entities in matters involving complex litigation; government relations at the local, state, and national level; and general business law advice and counsel.
He has significant experience representing emerging and early-stage companies, where he carefully balances providing sufficient legal protection with ensuring adequate resources are available to push a company's product to market.
A rising star in Georgia's government and legal communities: Elected Chair of Georgia Government Transparency & Campaign Finance
And finds the time to give back: He volunteers to be on:
Executive Committee of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
    Georgia Indigent Representation Task Force
Before we follow your career path, tell a bit about Holland & Knight, which is a global law firm with more than 1,300 lawyers with expertise for providing representation in litigation, business, real estate and governmental law.
What brought you to the three law firms before joining Holland & Knight?
Did each in a way influence and prepare you for the next law firm?
What led you to move to different law firms.? This is an important question because one need to know when it is time to move on and not get stuck in a ‘comfortable’ rut.
Artie: I am a serial networker or NetWeaver as I like to be and that’s how I first met you, at a BBA social mixer. How important is networking for you and how much time do you devote to networking?
Networking is more than attending mixers. It was very smart of you when starting out to introduce yourself to incubator companies – as they grow so will your relationship with them.
Has any of them developed into the big time?
You also became involved in politics and government services. And it is good to give back by joining support organizations; and that can also develop relationships; can you share those experiences and in what way do they help grow your practice?
What opportunities are there to develop relations within a large firm like Holland & Knight?
What advice can you offer a young attorney starting out?
What advice can you offer an attorney who might be with a small firm and would like to join a much larger firm?
You have been practicing law for 7 years now, innovation affects every industry and innovation is moving faster than before; what do you see are differences in practicing law today than when you started out? For example, do you still need those old law books or is everything you need to research can be found more quickly online?
Where do you see innovation going in law in the next few years?
What is the trend in the market?

    Greg Thomas
    LSGF Management
Greg Thomas is president of LSGF Management and a franchisee of several brands including Great Clips and Smoothie King.
Working as a water delivery boy in 2004 and having a net worth of about zero, Greg embellished some financial applications to secure a loan to buy a distressed/under-performing hair salon. A combination of great operations and out of the box marketing led this becoming the fastest growing salon in the country.
Following that same business model, Greg bought several more distressed businesses. A few years later he teamed with neighbor Grant Simon to form LSGF management, which owns/operates over 160 stores.
In addition to being a franchisee, Greg served as co-op president for 8 years. In that role, he developed several large cross-promotions and charity-marketing concepts with a goal of increasing foot traffic without discounting.
One of those programs was the Great Clips 300 NASCAR race which resulted in the highest attended Nationwide Race in Atlanta’s history.
As long as business continues to be profitable and fun, Greg and Grant plan to continue adding more stores.

Scott Lowery, Back to Square One on Capital Club Radio
Join Michael Flock of FLOCK Specialty Finance as he interviews Scott Lowery, a well-known leader and successful entrepreneur in the debt buying industry.
Scott, throughout his tenure, was the Founder, CEO, President and Chairman of SquareTwo Financial Corporation, originally known as Collect America, LTD, headquartered in Denver, CO which became one of the top debt buyers in the United States and Canada. Under Scott’s guidance as CEO, thecompany grew to over 25 franchised law firms across the US, over 100 local counsel legal firms in the network and revenue consistently exceeding $300M annually, with its top annual revenue number just under 600 million. Prior to the financial crisis, Collect America was in talks for an IPO with a valuation approaching $1.4B. After a new CEO took charge, the financial performance declined severely and SquareTwo filed bankruptcy in 2017 and was ultimately sold to Resurgent Capital Services, LP, a subsidiary of Sherman Financial Group.
In 2018, Scott and his team acquired Galaxy Capital Acquisition, LLC which is a debt buyer and master servicer located in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, Scott is an attorney at Rausch, Sturm, Israel, Enerson and Horniek, LLC, based in Wisconsin. Scott discusses how he goes back to “square one” with his new platform Galaxy.
Scott currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Valor Christian High School, the Daniels School of Business Executive Advisory Board, the Colorado UpLift Board of Directors and Executive Board and the ACE Scholarships Board of Trustees. He also served on the Denver Hospice Board of Directors and the Investment Committee.
Scott earned a BS degree in Business Administration and a JD degree from the University of Denver. In 2004, he was the recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Scott and his wife reside in Denver and are the proud parents of three daughters.
Here is a glimpse of what Scott shared in the interview:
“…. success is not linear, It’s not a direct trade-off. So, you can do 90% of the work and still have zero or five or 10% of the success. Then suddenly it trips.”
“… so this “square one”, a re-do or encore is just a way to gather again great people and work with some fun people. And I love the business … There are so many levers to pull.”
About building culture: “I think it’s simple and it’s hard. The things you learned in elementary school, how to play well with others in the sand box. You’ve got to genuinely like people. You’ve got to genuinely respect people. You’ve got to have people believe in your vision and believe in you, and then they’ll push you.”

FirstLight Home Care, TeamLogic IT and Corporate Financial Options on Franchise Business Radio
    Greg Benage
FirstLight Home Care of Northwest Atlanta
Greg Benage spent the past ten years with U.S. Bank in several product management roles within the retail payments business. He managed credit card loyalty marketing for five years, small business credit card product for three years, and consumer credit card product for the last two years. His responsibilities included product strategy and new product development, marketing strategy, market and competitive intelligence, and customer engagement and loyalty initiatives. Prior to joining the bank, Greg spent more than ten years in small business, first as an entrepreneur and then as an executive with the company he sold his business to. Greg earned his bachelor’s degree from Tulane University and is pursuing an MBA at the University of Georgia.
Maria Benage hails from Moscow, Russian Federation, and spent three years working as a nurse after graduating medical college. She then returned to school, earning a master’s degree in English language and linguistics from Moscow State Pedagogical University. Upon graduation, she worked as a translator and in business support roles with several international companies and law firms with offices in Moscow. After immigrating to the U.S., she worked for three years in client services and procurement with a company that imported books and journals from publishers in Europe and Asia for academic and research libraries, including the Library of Congress.
Greg and Maria have shared the goal of owning and growing their own business for several years. Both have been caregivers for aging loved ones, and non-medical home care was always at the top of their list of potential business opportunities. Greg’s mother lived with the couple for the last four years of her life, and both Greg and Maria served as her primary caregivers during this time. In the last four months of her life she was in and out of the hospital and rehab, and Greg and Maria gained firsthand experience with the in-home care industry. Before immigrating to the U.S., Maria lived with her grandmother and was her primary caregiver for many years following the untimely death of Maria’s mother.
For Greg and Maria, the potential for return on investment and long-term growth and profitability are important considerations in any business opportunity, but the decision is also a personal one born from these experiences with Greg’s mother and Maria’s grandmother. They feel a deep sense of empathy for those who need some extra help and companionship, and they understand from their own experiences the stress and anxiety borne by family members who want to know that their loved ones are getting the care they need. Greg and Maria also want to build a business that has a purpose beyond profit and loss, one that makes a positive contribution to their community.
When Greg and Maria communicated these goals and desires to their franchise broker, Pamela Currie, she came back with one recommendation in the home care space: FirstLight. Greg and Maria believe this is because the company’s core values, its purpose and its “why,” are so closely aligned with their own. As the process has unfolded, Greg and Maria have also been impressed with the experience and vision of the executive management team, and with the fact that everyone with FirstLight they’ve spoken to has continued to emphasize those core values, that purpose, and the ways in which they guide everything the company does and how it does them. Based on their experience with FirstLight Home Care to date, Greg and Maria are not surprised by the excellent satisfaction ratings the company has earned from franchisees.
Greg and Maria have been married for twelve years and live in Smyrna, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

Pastor:  Steve Saintus – Haiti – Dominican Republic (NorthStar Church)
“Mission of your Business” – Haiti and Dominican Republic
“The Call for the Children, Family and Faith in a Far Away Land”
Topic: The Mission as a Leader and the Calling to a Diverse Level of Leadership
Pastor Steve Saintus was born in Port-au-Prince, in 1970. He left for the Unites States in 1986 where he became an educator in the public school system licensed in the areas of Math, French and Adult Education. Steve has studied electrical engineering, and theology. He is currently pending a doctorate degree in Education from Liberty University. He is soon-to-be a published author of his autobiography. He is also an enrolled agent with the IRS and has his own tax firm.
Pastor Steve has functioned in various leadership roles. He is a senior pastor who has planted many churches here in the USA and abroad. He is president and founder of Hosanna Helping Hand, a non-profit organization that supports the various schools and ministries internationally. He is a family counselor, a bible professor, an entrepreneur, but most importantly he is husband to the angel of his life, Esther for twenty-five years and father to his wonderful twenty-four year old son Joshua, his gift from God.
Most people who know him describe him as a loving and caring  human being, a promoter of excellence, a passionate visionary, but above all a servant of God and a man of great faith. After the earthquake that devastated his home land-Haiti, Steve moved his ministry to Haiti to help those in need. He is running an elementary school of 200 kids, a professional school with 47 young men and women, and a group home where he has opened his personal home to 10 kids whose parents are not able to care for.
Pastor Steve looks forward to a future of ministering the gospel  of Jesus through his personal testimonies and experiences to reach people for Christ, and caring for those in need.
