    Topics to Discuss:
National Employment Situation report contains some solid numbers, but mixed headlines. The solid numbers are in job gains, where the nation added 213,000 jobs, well above the market expectation of around 190,000.
Revisions to the two previous months added another 37,000 jobs. The mixed part of the report is that the headline is the unemployment rate (U3) ticked up from 3.8% to 4.0%.
The expectation was for no change. This was mostly due to an increase in the labor force participation, which moved up 0.2 percentage points after being essentially unchanged since February.
At this point the economy needs the additional workers, so this is a fundamentally good thing. The broader measure of labor underutilization (U6) also rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.8%.
Average hourly earnings rose 2.7% from a year ago, slightly below expectations, but about in line with recent history.
Jobs gains were led by professional and business services, followed by manufacturing, which had a solid 30,000 job addition, mostly in durable goods. Strength was also seen in health care, construction, and mining. Retail was the only sector with a notable loss of jobs (-22,000), but that did not offset last month’s gain of 25,000. Other sectors were essentially unchanged.
All in all, a pretty good report, despite an easily misinterpreted rise in unemployment.

  • Amazon Storefronts, Shop Exclusively from U.S. Small Businesses Interview with Gene Marks on Georgia Business Radio
Amazon Storefronts, Shop Exclusively from U.S. Small Businesses Interview with Gene Marks on Georgia Business Radio
Today we have Gene Marks, Washington Post columnist author and financial expert joining us to talk about how supporting the U.S. small businesses online is an important concept for not just Americans and local business, but for the entire community and now it's even easier when shopping online to buy from us small businesses with a new store called Amazon Storefronts. Making life so easy these days, thank you to Amazon. This is a store to shop exclusively from U.S. small businesses, which is very passionate and close to our hearts at the Pro Business Channel, helping support those small and medium-sized businesses.
We certainly have a business expert joining us on today's show, Gene Marks writes daily for the Washington Post as I mentioned focusing on issues affecting the business community also writes weekly columns for Forbes, Inc. Magazine, Fox Business, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur.com and if we can afford him on the Pro Business Channel. Gene this could be a regular series.
[00:01:12] Yeah, I'll have my agent call your agent. Well as soon as we get an agent we'll take that call. Yeah. All right. So, these columns are read by hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses owners around the country.
[00:01:25] So this is definitely in everyone's wheelhouse for this episode. Gene has written six books on business management specifically geared towards again, those small and medium-sized companies.  Here to analyze and provide details about this new digital storefront is author and as I mentioned business expert Gene Marks. Gene before we get into this, you’ve written six books.
[00:01:47] So what's your most popular and best known or of those six books? By the way these books are sold on Amazon.com.  My bestselling book is, “In God We Trust, Everyone Else Pays Cash” it’s a bunch of cash flow advice and tips, geared toward small business owners. Okay, and we may give a teaser at the end of this segment are about your next book maybe in the work.
[00:02:12] So let's jump into this topic, tell our listeners why it's important for shoppers to buy from us businesses, even when they're shopping online. I mean, well Rich, you know that she talked about this on your show as well. I mean there are hundreds of thousands of small businesses in in Georgia, you know, these are businesses that that provide many jobs to the state and nationally, you know, small businesses provide more than half of the jobs.
[00:02:40] We know that small businesses are a huge part of the US economy and there are a lot of people out there that want to support small businesses and you know their government programs that do that some companies are doing that as well and. You mentioned in your introduction. I mean Amazon stepped up this week as well and they're launching something called storefronts and you know, what the whole backstory to store funds riches that you know Amazon if you buy something from Amazon, it's more likely that it's coming from a small Merchant.
[00:03:12] Half of the products that sold on the site comes from a small business or a merchant and there's more than a million small businesses in the us alone that are selling their products on Amazon. So, Amazon sort of said, you know what let's bring some of these guys together. They're starting off at 20,000 small businesses selling more than a million products under storefronts.
[00:03:36] You and I or anybody else that wants make sure that when we’re buying something the same as usual, but we want to make sure it's going to a U.S. based small business. We can do that from their store front site and that's just an amazing concept.
[00:03:57] So this is not bricks-and-mortar, right? Absolutely, correct. And you know what, you do bring up a really good point Rich. I mean yes, this is a digital storefront,

The American Fundraising Foundation (Amfund) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a Platinum rating from Guide Star. It has been serving other nonprofit organizations for over 20 years and has distributed over $33 million for worthy causes.
Each year Amfund’s Board of Directors carefully selects organizations to support through sponsorship of their events.
In recognition of its 20 year anniversary, Amfund unveiled a new logo that includes its signature tree and a Golden Pear. The tree has always stood for growth and deep roots. The newly added golden pear is symbolic of the extra touch that Amfund brings to each of its nonprofit partners.
The history of the pear is extensive and best described as symbolizing wisdom, good health, longevity, and prosperity — all the things Amfund sees in the organizations it serves and the causes each represents.
And behind every golden pear is a great story. It may be the story of a child receiving special literacy assistance, or a woman finding shelter from an abusive relationship or an animal being rescued.
Every time Amfund helps an organization it is helping others. Each person has a “golden pear story” to share. That’s Amfund… The nonprofit with the golden pear

  • Facebook Boost Event Returns to Atlanta
Facebook brought its global Boost with Facebook event back to Atlanta on Sept. 10 and the event was a huge success. Facebook welcomed over 1500 Atlanta community members to the Southern Exchange Ballroom and kicked off the two-day digital skills training event to empower small-business owners with the tools and resources they need to build their business.
A panel of Atlanta small businesses walked through their own experiences and shared how they use these skills every day in their business. Panelists included:
(L to R)  Maranda Walker-Dowell (Joes Gourmet) Nate Martin (Magnolia Room Tucker) and Farrah Haidar (Seven Sisters Scones) join Alexandra Duffield from Facebook (moderating panel) on a discussion on how having digital skills have helped their businesses.
    Joes Gourmet - Maranda Walker-Dowell
Maranda came up with the idea of packaging a ready to cook breading mix about three years ago and the business has been growing ever since. Facebook and Instagram have been key to their growth, as they are trying to drive traffic to their e-commerce so they can sell their 12 oz fish fried package nationwide. They use advanced tools to target their audiences, the Facebook Pixel and Dynamic Ads being the most notable. Creating Custom and Lookalike audiences have made it easier to reach the right audience. Thanks to their success and community involvement they have been featured in Shark Tank and Good Morning America.
Seven Sisters Scones - Farrah Haidar
Seven Sisters Scones started their business in 2015, when one of seven sisters (who was actually a chef) decided to start selling her delicious scones. The business has expanded from selling simply scones to a cafe where they have a full breakfast and lunch menu. The scones have become so popular that Farrah decided to build an ecommerce business to start selling nationwide.
Magnolia Room Tucker - Nate Martin
Magnolia Room Tucker was created to pay homage to a restaurant called “S & S Cafeteria”, which the owner was a patron for 15 years. Nate said that the owner saw that people were going to lose a great restaurant to visit and work at, so he bought the business, moved it to Tucker, and even hired on at least 20-25 of the staff. While they have some local competition that has been in business for over 60 years, and Nate says that if it wasn't for Facebook, Magnolia Room would not have survived.
A Facebook representative also presented the latest tips and tricks for businesses on the platform. Participants learned best practices on connecting with more customers, creating ads to increase conversions, managing a digital presence and building awareness of a brand.

    J. J. Haas Author of Welcome to Sugarville on Author Talk Show
    Guest BIO:
    J. J. Haas, author of Welcome to Sugarville, has published fiction and poetry in a wide variety of magazines such as Shenandoah, Rattle, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Asimov's Science Fiction, Baen's Universe, and Writer's Digest. He is a Senior Content Developer at ADP and a Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication, and he has been an Instructor in the Creative Writing Certificate Program at Emory Continuing Education. Haas is a graduate of the College of the University of Chicago in English Language and Literature and a Past President of the Alumni Club of Atlanta. He lives in a suburb of Atlanta with his wife Melissa and two Westies, Roro and Coco.
    Brief Description:
Welcome to Sugarville: A Novel in Stories
    Topics to Discuss:
    My book
    Creative writing in general
1.What is the name of the book and when was it published?
Welcome to Sugarville: A Novel in Stories will be published on April 9 in softcover, ebook, and audiobook formats following the book launch at The Carter Center in Atlanta. I recorded the audiobook myself after turning our daughter’s old closet into a recording studio, and ACX recently approved the files for upload to Audible.com.
    2.What’s the book’s first line?
The first line of the first story is “Dr. Albert Cole woke up thirsty,” which serves as a metaphor for the spiritual paucity of the protagonist. Kurt Vonnegut once said “Make your characters want something right away even if it's only a glass of water.” I decided to take that advice literally.
3.What’s the book about? Give us the “pitch”.
Welcome to Sugarville, a town where fantasy meets reality and visitors take journeys of the imagination into the unknown. J. J. Haas stuns and delights with this engaging collection of linked stories.
4.What inspired you to write the book? A particular person? An event?
My primary inspiration for writing fiction is the black humor of Kurt Vonnegut and Flannery O’Connor. I particularly like the surface simplicity of their writing coupled with the deeper metaphorical and ironic meaning. I modeled the structure of my collection on Sherwood Anderson’s book Winesburg, Ohio, with each story set in the mythical town of Sugarville, Georgia. Thematically, all of the characters embark on spiritual journeys to find themselves, and each story contains a fantastic element that heightens the drama.
5.What’s the main reason someone should really read this book?
People should be interested in reading my book because it will make them laugh and give them something to think about. I hope they’ll take away a renewed interest in examining their own lives by vicariously experiencing the events in this book through the eyes of my characters. While fantasy stories are typically set in an imagined past and science-fiction stories are typically set in an imagined future, these stories are set in a re-imagined present that sheds light on the spiritual dilemmas of our time.
6.(*For fictional titles only) What's the most distinctive thing about the main character? Who-real or fictional-would you say the character reminds you of?
I affectionately refer to the characters in my book as my “Sugarvillains.” They aren’t really bad people at all, but lost souls searching for meaning and dignity in their lives with sometimes comic, sometimes tragic results. All of the characters are based on people I’ve met in real life, but the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

Rich Casanova began his broadcasting career in California’s central valley at KSKS-FM. While in California he also ran a successful entertainment company whose staff and crew entertained over 100,000 people. After moving to Atlanta and selling his entertainment company, Casanova ventured into publishing as the Publisher and Franchise Owner of Coffee News, headquartered in Bangor, ME.
Later became the Founder and CCO, Chief Connection Officer, of an online platform where local business professionals register to receive a free list of the top 100 networking events in metro Atlanta.
With a name like Casanova and his gregarious personality, Rich was a natural as a music radio DJ. "I got the radio bug early in my career and often thought how great it would be if there was an opportunity to participate in a talk radio format with a pro-business perspective interviewing thought leaders from the local business community." Thus was born the Pro Business Channel where Rich is the CoFounder and Chief Visionary Officer.
