  • Bellevue Trust’s Paul Major: small cap healthcare's big opportunity
Bellevue Healthcare Trust PLC (LSE:BBH) co-portfolio manager Paul Major tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the potential benefits for the healthcare sector as tech stocks lose their lustre.
Major discussed how the long-overdue rotation from tech could positively impact healthcare, particularly small and mid-cap growth stocks, which stand to gain from a potential decline in interest rates. He pointed out that while tech stocks have seen massive growth, healthcare, especially the biotech sector, might now be poised for significant gains.
Major also highlighted the return of the healthcare industry to pre-pandemic norms and the increasing interest in defensive, longer-term earnings within the sector. "Small mid-cap healthcare should be the biggest beneficiary within the wider healthcare investment universe of a negative rate environment," Major said. He further discussed the market's focus on GLP-1 drugs and the potential for new players to emerge as the market broadens.
Additionally, Major shared insights on the trust's current cash position and plans for reallocating capital in the coming months. He emphasised the trust's strategy of looking beyond giants like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to identify the next generation of obesity treatments.

  • Tonix Pharmaceuticals accelerates Mpox vaccine as WHO declares global health emergency
Tonix Pharmaceuticals CEO Seth Lederman speaks with with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's accelerated efforts to develop a single-dose vaccine for Mpox, TNX-801, in light of the World Health Organization's declaration of a global health emergency. Lederman highlighted the vaccine's promising results in animal studies, which showed protection against lethal challenges with Clade 1 Mpox virus and prevention of skin lesions, potentially blocking forward transmission.
As the threat of more lethal strains like Clade 1 emerges, Tonix is ramping up its development process, focusing on producing GMP material suitable for human trials. The vaccine, based on Tonix's RPV platform, is designed for rapid distribution and could play a critical role in managing the public health crisis.
Lederman also discussed the potential risks associated with Clade 1's spread beyond Africa, stressing the need for quick and effective solutions. With a single dose, this vaccine could provide a durable defense against Mpox, akin to vaccines for smallpox.
The company's efforts reflect the urgency of the situation and the importance of innovative solutions in pandemic preparedness.

  • Light Science Technologies expands in sports entertainment market with third major order
Light Science Technologies Holdings PLC (AIM:LST) CEO Simon Deacon talked with Proactive about the company's significant progress in the sports entertainment sector. Deacon highlighted that the company has secured its third major order from a prominent client, bringing the total revenue from this client to over £400,000. The contracts involve the production of electronics embedded in golf balls that track performance and relay the data to screens or apps, a product that shows substantial growth potential due to recurring revenue opportunities.
Deacon emphasised the importance of this sector, noting that Light Science Technologies is actively expanding its presence in sports entertainment, which is a new but promising market for the company. The client, which operates multiple sites across the US and the UK, has provided a steady stream of business, and the technology's limited lifespan ensures ongoing demand.
Additionally, Deacon discussed the strong performance of the group's CEM (Contract Electronics Manufacturing) division and the broader group's ability to exceed management expectations. With the integration of the new Passive Fire Protection business and growing margins in the Controlled Environment Agriculture sector, the company is seeing a balanced and profitable growth trajectory.

  • Legend Mining identifies six new conductors at Rockford's Octagonal Prospect
Legend Mining Ltd (ASX:LEG) executive chair Mark Wilson joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss six newly identified conductor targets at Octagonal prospect within its Rockford Project in the Fraser Range, Western Australia.
These conductors were identified through an extension of the maiden High-Power Fixed Loop Electro-Magnetics survey which started in July, after weather-related delays. The extension survey was carried out by Highpower EM Geophysical Services Pty Ltd and revealed six complex conductors related to the mineralised eastern contact of the Octagonal Intrusive contact.
These findings suggest that nickel-copper sulphide mineralisation previously identified in this area may extend further east, to where there has been limited drill testing.
The company plans to combine the survey results with reprocessed seismic data and AI/ML analyses to define new drill targets.
Diamond drill planning is underway, pending a site visit from Native Title Holders in September 2024, required before further land access negotiations.
Meanwhile, a new HPFLTEM survey is also being conducted at the Magnus prospect within the same project.

  • Elixir Energy concludes successful stimulation phase at Daydream-2
Elixir Energy Ltd (ASX:EXR) managing director Neil Young joins Proactive’s Tylah Tully to discuss the completion of the Daydream-2 stimulation program, part of its Project Grandis in Queensland’s Taroom Trough.
The company successfully stimulated six separate zones in the well, including the Lorelle Sandstone, which had previously flowed gas, three sandstones above it and two coal zones. The stimulation program employed various novel methods, some of which Elixir believes were used for the first time in Australia. This innovative approach is part of the company’s research and development efforts to leverage advances in stimulation technology since the Taroom Trough was first appraised around a decade ago.
The project is now shifting to the flow testing phase, with Elixir aiming to confirm separate gas flows from the coals and initiate the conversion of prospective resources into contingent resources. Additionally, it plans to mill out all plugs and flow all zones together. The duration of the flow test will depend on the results and clean-up time with formal reporting to follow reactively as results become available.
Young commended the technical team and contractors for their work and highlighted the significance of pioneering key aspects of the stimulation phase in Australia.

  • Botala Energy gains environmental nod for 250MW solar project in Botswana
Botala Energy Ltd (ASX: BTE) director and chairman Wolf Martinick joins Jonathan Jackson in the Proactive studio to discuss a key environmental approval for the Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park in Botswana. The approval is for a 250-megawatt (MW) solar project, developed in partnership with AAAS Energy of the Netherlands. This is part of a broader strategy that includes the Serowe coal bed methane (CBM) gas project, BTE's primary focus.
The approval followed a comprehensive environmental and social review, enabling the company to progress its energy goals sustainably. This latest development builds on previous approvals for the Serowe gasfield and the construction of a gas pipeline to Leupane.

  • Santacruz Silver Mining Achieves Strong Q2 2024 Financial Results, Despite Non-Cash Charge Impact
Arturo Prestamo, Executive Chairman and CEO of Santacruz Silver Mining, provided an in-depth update on the company's financial and operational performance during the second quarter of 2024. Speaking with Steve Darling from Proactive, Prestamo highlighted the company’s solid financial results, which were driven by strong production and revenue figures.
Santacruz Silver Mining reported $70 million in revenue for Q2 2024, contributing to a total of $123 million in revenue for the first half of the year. The company also achieved nearly $16 million in gross profit during the quarter, underscoring the robust operational performance of its mining activities.
However, Prestamo noted that the company's net income was affected by a non-cash charge of $6.9 million in the quarter. This charge was related to fair value changes on the contingent value rights, a financial instrument that was impacted by the rise in zinc prices from March to June. Despite this, the company maintained strong financial metrics, including an Adjusted EBITDA of $8.9 million for Q2 2024 and $8.6 million for the first half of the year.
On the production side, Santacruz Silver Mining processed a total of 500,755 tonnes of material during the second quarter, contributing to a total of 971,504 tonnes processed in the first half of 2024. This led to the production of 4.8 million silver equivalent ounces in Q2, with a total of 9.3 million silver equivalent ounces produced in the first half of the year.
Prestamo emphasized the company's commitment to maintaining strong operational performance while navigating the challenges posed by market fluctuations, such as the changes in zinc prices. Santacruz Silver Mining remains focused on optimizing its production processes and financial management to continue delivering value to its shareholders.
As the company looks ahead to the remainder of 2024, it is poised to build on its successes from the first half of the year, with a continued focus on maximizing production efficiency and financial performance.
