  • FTSE 100 starts week on the back foot; Frasers rises as Ted Baker axes last shops - Market Report
London's FTSE 100 made a low-key start to what looks on paper to be a low-key week.
Blue chips were down by around twelve points at 8,298 in early deals with retailer Frasers topping the gainers, possibly on the demise of Ted Baker.
Housebuilders were also in the spotlight as Rightmove reported that the cut in interest rates by the Bank of England has led to an immediate surge in buyers returning to the housing market
Following an 11% uptick in July, the number of prospective buyers contacting estate agents has climbed by 19% since the first of August, the property portal said Monday.
Housebuilders Barratt Developments and Redrow meanwhile are set to complete their £2.5 billion merger by the end of the week, they said in a statement today.
Trading platform Plus500 was a good early riser after stating it expects its full-year performance to be “ahead of current market expectations” after a robust set of interim results.

  • Elixir Energy expands Project Grandis with ATP 2077 award
Elixir Energy Ltd (ASX:EXR) managing director Neil Young joins Jonathan Jackson in the Proactive studio to discuss the formal award of ATP 2077, expanding its 100%-owned Project Grandis in Queensland. This award follows the company's appointment as Preferred Tenderer for the area adjacent to its existing ATP 2044 licence.
The new licence, which has an initial term of six years and no domestic market restrictions, comprises three sub-blocks. Sub-block A, located near ATP 2044, shares similar geology and has had contingent gas resources independently certified.
Sub-block B, also overlying the Taroom Trough, will be assessed for prospective resources in the future, while Sub-block C, adjacent to existing gas infrastructure, has identified potential shallow drilling targets.
The contingent resources for Sub-block A are based on detailed analysis by Elixir and independent firm ERCE. The key challenge remains demonstrating a commercial flow rate and developing a viable plan. Elixir’s recent achievement of a 2.5 million cubic feet per day flow rate from the Lorelle Sandstone is noted, with further testing planned.
Young emphasised that the resource booking from ATP 2077 is a strategic achievement, adding valuable gas resources at minimal cost.

  • Coniagas Battery Metals Advances EV Market with Sourcing and Sustainable Processing Technologies
Coniagas Battery Metals CEO Frank Basa joined Steve Darling from Proactive to provide an update on the company's strategic advancements as it aims to become a major player in the electric vehicle (EV) metals market. In its continued pursuit of growth, Coniagas is focusing on expanding its strategic sourcing capabilities and exploring potential processing opportunities, which could significantly enhance its competitive position in the industry.
One of the key strategies Basa discussed is the potential integration of the innovative Re-2Ox process as a toll operator. The Re-2Ox is a cutting-edge hydrometallurgical process designed for the extraction and production of cleaner, low-carbon, battery-grade materials. Unlike traditional smelting methods, Re-2Ox eliminates the need for high-temperature processing, which substantially reduces the environmental impact associated with metal production. This environmentally friendly approach aligns with the growing demand for sustainable practices within the EV industry, positioning Coniagas as a forward-thinking leader in the market.
Basa also highlighted the company's success in securing potential monthly shipments of 200 to 500 tonnes of cobalt-copper concentrates from European warehouse operators. This strategic sourcing ensures a consistent and reliable supply of high-quality raw materials, which is crucial for maintaining continuous production. In addition to these European sources, Coniagas has also secured significant stockpiles in the Democratic Republic of Congo, totaling approximately 30 million tonnes. These stockpiles boast industry-leading grades, ranging from 1% to 6.5% copper and from 0.05% to 4.5% cobalt, further reinforcing the company's strong position in the EV metals supply chain.
This expansionary approach is a key component of Coniagas' "Feed First" strategy, which prioritizes the identification and acquisition of reliable, long-term sources of metals. By ensuring a stable and resilient supply chain, Coniagas is well-positioned to support the growing demand for EV batteries and related technologies. The combination of sustainable processing through Re-2Ox and strategic sourcing from both European and African suppliers underscores Coniagas' commitment to leading the charge in the EV metals market.
As the company continues to advance its strategic initiatives, Coniagas Battery Metals is poised to play a pivotal role in the global transition to electric vehicles, offering innovative solutions that meet both the environmental and operational needs of the industry.

  • Bitcoin's decline and growing US political interest in crypto - Crypto Roundup
Proactive's Billy Farrington provides a summary of recent developments in the cryptocurrency market.
Over the past week, Bitcoin showed less volatility compared to the previous week but remained underwhelming. The cryptocurrency's value dropped by approximately 6% against the US dollar, despite a brief 2% increase following a US wholesale inflation report. However, it declined again after consumer inflation data was released, which was unexpected as softer inflation figures usually benefit risk assets like Bitcoin. This decline was partly attributed to a significant $1 billion outflow of Tether stablecoins, suggesting reduced risk appetite among crypto traders.
Furthermore, the discussion touched on recent political developments in the US, where cryptocurrency is becoming a bipartisan issue. While Donald Trump has positioned himself as a pro-crypto candidate, recent remarks from Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, indicate a growing interest in supporting common-sense regulation for the crypto industry. This suggests that cryptocurrency could become a key topic in upcoming US presidential debates.

  • FTSE 100 breaks winning streak; housing stocks under pressure - Market Report
London’s FTSE 100 bucked its winning streak at the open on Friday despite fresh data showing a steady uptick in retail sales last month.
Retail sales volumes climbed as expected by 0.5% in July, following a 0.9% drop a month earlier. This was fuelled by a rise in shopping at department stores and on sports equipment as the Euros football tournament and Olympics in Paris took place.
Sports Direct owner Frasers Group had initially led the riser, before slipping back to around flat.
Housing stocks including Persimmon, Rightmove and Barratt Developments were among those weighing on the FTSE 100 though after a report warned that government housing targets may prove challenging to meet. Government targets to build 1.5 million homes over the next five years may not be met if the focus is placed entirely on building new towns, the think tank Centre for Cities revealed.

  • Elixir Energy reports successful gas flow test in Daydream-2 program
Elixir Energy Ltd managing director Neil Young joins Jonathan Jackson in the Proactive studio to provide an update on the Daydream-2 well drilling program at its 100%-owned Grandis Project in Queensland’s Taroom Trough.
The company completed a flow test of the Lorelle Sandstone, which was conducted at depths between 4,200 and 4,217 metres. The well was tested at multiple rates and choke sizes, achieving a maximum flow rate of 3.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFPD).
Stabilised rates ranged between 2.1 and 2.5 MMSCFPD. However, the presence of stimulation fluid in the wellbore suppressed the stabilised rate, suggesting that future production tests using a completion string could improve the flow rate to a stable 3.0 MMSCFPD. Minor amounts of condensate were recovered towards the end of the test. Previously, the unstimulated rate in April 2024 was 1.3 MMSCFPD, showing that the stimulation effectively increased gas flow.
Elixir has begun stimulating five additional zones as part of the ongoing Daydream-2 program, with further flow testing planned after the completion of these operations. The company anticipates reporting further updates in the coming weeks.
