  • Wanda Health discusses its recent AI developments
Wanda Health Inc CEO Tom Smith visits the Proactive London studio to speak with Thomas Warner after the Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) company announced the start of a new fundraise.
Smith gives an overview of what Wanda intends to do with the proceeds, highlighting the company's sharp focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its RPM solutions.
The company has also appointed a new head of AI to oversee the development of disease-specific AI algorithms, focusing on readmission risk, social suitability, and insurer billing data integration into their platform.
Smith goes on to say that Wanda Health is currently undergoing FDA approval for their congestive heart failure readmission risk models. These models aim to predict patient exacerbations and hospital admissions up to seven days in advance, providing healthcare providers with crucial data for early intervention.
In addition to AI developments, Wanda Health has established a clinical outsourcing team to support primary care providers who are resource-constrained. This move not only improves patient outcomes but also boosts revenue for healthcare providers and Wanda Health. The company is also focusing on automated healthcare solutions, aiming to enhance patient triage and management while still valuing human intervention in healthcare.

  • Galliford Try lifts revenue and profit guidance for second time this financial year
Galliford Try Holdings PLC (LSE:GFRD) chief financial officer Andrew Duxbury speaks to Thomas Warner from Proactive after the UK construction group released a trading update for the second half of calendar year 2023.
Duxbury highlights the company's strong cash position and impressive order book, factors which have combined to prompt the business to increase its guidance for the fiscal year ending June 2024. Guidance was also increased in September 2023.
Duxbury says that the uplift, estimated at 5% in revenue and profit before tax, reflects the company's consistent performance across its business sectors. Notably, the building business secured an £87 million contract in North London and commenced a development scheme in Cardiff, while their highways and environment divisions also reported significant progress.
Addressing the potential impact of the upcoming UK general election, Duxbury expresses confidence in the company's stability, citing a secure workload that extends beyond the election cycle. He emphasises the continuity of their projects, regardless of governmental changes, due to the essential nature of their work in various sectors.
Furthermore, Duxbury updates on Galliford Try's Sustainable Growth Strategy first set out in 2021, aiming for a turnover of £1.6 billion and 3% operating margins by 2026, up from £1.1 billion and 2% in 2020. With significant progress already made, the company plans to revise and extend these targets to 2030, demonstrating their commitment to growth and financial discipline.

  • ANGLE PLC present at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference - January 11th
In a comprehensive presentation at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference, ANGLE PLC's CEO, Andrew Newland, and CFO, Ian Griffiths, detailed the company's innovative approach to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Newland emphasised ANGLE's breakthrough technology, the Parsortix system, a groundbreaking instrument designed for separating cancer cells from blood. This British-developed technology provides a viable alternative to traditional biopsies, especially useful as cancer evolves over time, making repeated tissue biopsies impractical.
ANGLE PLC has achieved a significant milestone with the only FDA clearance globally for harvesting cancer cells from blood for analysis, taking six and a half years. This clearance serves as a major credibility factor in discussions with potential customers.
Newland highlighted the company's successful commercialisation strategies, including worldwide distribution networks and partnerships with pharmaceutical companies. They are targeting the lucrative market of repeat biopsies, necessary for monitoring cancer progression, by offering a simpler, less invasive blood test. Their technology, already patented in major economic regions until 2034, can isolate cancer cells even in extremely low concentrations.
The company's revenue doubled in 2023, reaching $2.2 million, with expectations to triple in 2024. Their business model includes both product sales and service offerings to pharmaceutical companies. These services are critical for drug trials, allowing repeated analysis of cancer cells during treatment, providing valuable data that is currently unattainable through other means.
The CEO also unveiled the Parsortix cassette, a one-time use, microfluidic device, demonstrating their ability to capture living cancer cells for detailed analysis. This product, patent-protected and cost-effective to produce, can be sold for up to $300.
Moreover, ANGLE's breakthrough in analysing both living cancer cells and circulating tumor DNA presents a new frontier in personalised cancer treatment. This dual analysis approach could revolutionise how the effectiveness of cancer treatments is monitored and adjusted over time.

  • FTSE 100 down on mixed economic data from China - Market Report
Good morning from London where the FTSE 100 is down below 7,500 points on a day that’s started with an unexpected rise in inflation.
Figures from the ONS today show a very slight increase in December’s numbers, which arrested the steady downward slope we saw throughout the whole rest of the year to that point.
Despite some scary headlines though it appears that a bump in cigarette duty was the chief culprit and Paula Bejarano Carbo from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research dismisses today’s rise as statistical noise, rather than anything more significant.
Of more concern for the UK, or at least its biggest listed companies is the decidedly mixed performance of the Chinese economy. Some fresh figures today show the world’s second largest economy grew by 5.2% in 2023, but the property sector, which has been mired in a debt crisis for three years, continued to suffer in 2023.
Many of the FTSE’s biggest names are heavily exposed to the Chinese economy, and its little surprise that many of them are trading lower on the day today. Britain’s housebuilding giants are also trading lower this morning, perhaps hit by fears of slower interest rate cuts.
Over in the small cap space we’ve had a fundraise from Tirupati Graphite this morning, they were hoping to avoid it but have bitten the bullet and will be putting the money to good use at their facilities in Madagascar.
We’ve got plenty of interviews to come today so stay tuned, stay warm and have a great day.

  • Abingdon Health present at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference - January 11th
Chris Yates, CEO and co-founder of Abingdon Health PLC, presented at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference, detailing the company's impressive growth and future plans. Founded in 2008 and headquartered in York, Abingdon Health specialises as a lateral flow CRO (Contract Research Organisation) and CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation).
The company, with 83 employees primarily in York and a secondary site in Doncaster, primarily generates revenue through its contract service business, accounting for 95% of its income. Additionally, Abingdon Health has diversified into self-test products.
Under Yates' leadership, the company has seen substantial revenue growth, reporting just under £5.5 million in the last 12 months and a cash position of nearly £2 million at 2023's end. The firm's expertise in lateral flow test technology, significantly recognised during the COVID-19 pandemic, positions it well in a market expected to expand considerably over the next decade. Abingdon Health's services encompass the full spectrum of product development, from initial ideas to commercial success, including regulatory and analytical laboratory support.
A key element of Abingdon Health's strategy is its focus on CRO and CDMO services, offering a broad portfolio of customers and a significant pipeline of opportunities. The company's business model, which enables long-term revenue through manufacturing customers, is set to drive future growth. Furthermore, the firm has launched self-test products under the "Abingdon Simply Test" brand and provides end-to-end support for retailers creating their own branded products.
In the first half of the financial year, Abingdon Health reported £2.4 million in revenue, with expectations of surpassing the £2.9 million revenue from the second half of the previous year. The company has successfully collaborated with numerous businesses, including 52 North and Sellingnostics, contributing to the development of innovative tests for stroke diagnosis and sepsis.
Looking ahead, Yates anticipates continued growth across the CRO and CDMO customer base, expansion of the self-test product range, and further development of services like analytical testing. While not yet breakeven, Abingdon Health is strategically driving towards this goal in the next six to twelve months, underpinned by its focused strategy, revenue growth, and cost control measures. The lateral flow market's evolution and the shift towards self-testing present significant opportunities for Abingdon Health, solidifying its position as a leader in lateral flow technology application across various sectors.

  • Fusion Antibodies present at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference - January 11th
Fusion Antibodies PLC, CEO Adrian Kinkaid presented at the Proactive One2One Investor Conference. The company is diversifying its focus from primarily therapeutics to include diagnostics and research applications of antibodies. Kinkaid emphasised the company's expertise in antibody discovery, engineering, and manufacturing, highlighting its ability to reduce production costs and enhance efficiency.
Key to Fusion Antibodies' strategy are two innovative platforms: 'OptiMAL' and AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) based antibody design. 'OptiMAL' offers a highly diverse library of sequences based on the human immune repertoire, providing intact IgG molecules and mammalian cell expression, promising a more reliable manufacturing route. Meanwhile, their AI/ML initiative collaborates with partners and Oxford University to theoretically design antibodies, significantly improving efficiency and specificity in antibody development.

However, the company has made decisions to reduce costs and position itself for a rebound as market conditions improve. Their expanded focus includes immunodiagnostics and veterinary medicine, aiming to diversify revenue streams and reduce dependency on the volatile biotech sector.
Kinkaid concluded by noting Fusion Antibodies' readiness to collaborate on antibody development and optimisation, underscoring their commitment to innovation and market expansion. This proactive approach in antibody technology and strategic diversification positions Fusion Antibodies as a forward-thinking player in the biotech industry.
