  • Blackstone Minerals MD updates ahead of "big year" for the business
Blackstone Minerals Ltd (ASX:BSX, OTCQX:BLSTF) managing director Scott Williamson speak to Proactive's Thomas Warner about the company's ambitious plans for 2024.
Blackstone Minerals Ltd is focused on building an integrated battery metals processing business in Vietnam that produces nickel-cobalt-manganese precursor products for Asia’s growing lithium-ion battery industry. Williamson explains that Blackstone is looking to restart the Ta Khoa Nickel Project, Vietnam, a previously operating nickel sulfide mine, alongside constructing a refinery. This refinery is central to the project as it will produce chemical products for lithium-ion batteries, importing nickel feedstocks from Australia and Canada.
Highlighting the project's unique approach, Williamson explains that unlike many of their peers who produce nickel concentrate, their refinery will produce a precursor cathode active material (PCAM), essential for the first stage of lithium-ion batteries. This high-nickel cathode is vital for long-range electric vehicles and consists of a nickel, cobalt, and manganese ratio of around 8:1:1.
Blackstone Minerals is currently finalising the definitive feasibility study for the refinery. The company has conducted a 12-month pilot plant and extensive work on their flow sheet, using hydrometallurgy technology to produce a low carbon, green nickel product. This product has a significantly lower CO2 footprint compared to other sources, notably Indonesian nickel.
In terms of funding, Williamson mentioned that Blackstone is exploring partnerships, particularly with the battery industries in Japan, China, and Korea, while also undertaking a rights issue linked to a new acquisition, the Wabowden Project in Manitoba.
The Wabowden project, also a previously operating nickel mine, is part of a strategic plan to secure a stable nickel concentrate supply for the Vietnamese refinery. This project, along with the Buckeye mine, will contribute to a two-mine, one-refinery model, enhancing the company's ability to supply chemical products for its partners.

  • Bluefield Solar Income Fund investment advisor on a "positive start" to 2024
The Bluefield Solar Income Fund (LSE:BSIF), advised by Bluefield Partners, recently announced a significant strategic partnership with GLIL Infrastructure, involving the acquisition of a 247-megawatt UK solar portfolio from Lightsource bp.
Bluefield Partners' Managing Partner James Armstrong visits the Proactive London studio to speak with Thomas Warner to talk about how the agreements fits into the fund's long-term strategy of delivering attractive, inflation-linked dividends to its shareholders.
Armstrong highlights the three key components of this partnership. Firstly, the acquisition of the Lightsource bp portfolio, which he praises for its diversity, proven management, and high levels of regulated revenues, aligning closely with the fund's objective of providing long-term, inflation-linked returns. About 80% of the revenues from this acquisition are linked to inflation, making it a potentially more attractive proposition for the fund's shareholders.
The second phase of the partnership involves selling a 50% stake to GLIL. This move is aimed at reducing the fund's short-term debt burden, which has been a challenge due to the broader market's recent struggles with higher inflation and interest rates, leading to lower public market valuations of infrastructure and renewable energy assets.
The third phase focuses on joint development of a pipeline of new assets over the next 2-5 years, leveraging the fund's strong market position and decade-long track record of high performance.
In response to potential shareholder reactions, Armstrong anticipates positive support, citing ongoing discussions with them. He says its been a "reasonably positive start" to the year after a challenging 2023.
In summary, Bluefield Solar Income Fund's strategic partnership with JLL Infrastructure, involving significant acquisitions and collaborative developments, aligns with its goal of providing sustainable, inflation-linked returns to shareholders. The fund's management remains optimistic for 2024, despite recent market challenges, expecting continued recovery and shareholder support.
