A five-year-old girl who had been sick over the weekend was put to sleep on a couch next to her seven-year-old sister. Medical examinations revealed evidence of sexual trauma and when the child died three days later, the medical examiner announced she was murdered by strangulation. As evidence continues to come forth in the #CalebFlynn murder trial, the state is presenting one bombshell after another as they try to convince this jury that Caleb murdered his wife, #AshleyFlynn. This particular day of testimony was very interesting to me, and I wanted to dig into a little more deeply because I’ve sat across from people in the hours after a violent death. It’s one of the hardest interviews you’ll ever do because the people you’re talking too are either still in shock or performing the version of shock they think is expected. As an investigator, you’re trying to get a clean, detailed account while the memory is fresh, but you’re also watching for the places where the story starts to fall apart. Regardless, these interviews are strategy sessions where you give the individual time to talk and you can’t be uncomfortable when long, uninterrupted stretches happen. Then you take what you’re told verbally and start to compare it with the story the crime scene is telling you and this is exactly what we got to see unfold in court.
