Today, as we're heading towards a new era of BABs—and a new era of brand-new bookkeepers—I think it's a good idea to revisit an important topic…setting realistic expectations.

As I always say, bookkeeping can be simple. Bookkeeping can be scalable. Bookkeeping can support your life while making room for you to actually live that life…

But that doesn't happen overnight.

I don't want you all to think that bookkeeping is some kind of get-rich-quick scheme. My business is everything I ever wanted it to be, but that didn't happen overnight! I had to put in the work. I had to build it intentionally over time—a lot of time.

It took a while to see the return on investment. But now that it's here, it's not only worth the wait…it is a recurring form of ROI. Meaning, it never stops giving.

I have no idea.

I know, I know–I can hear the collective groaning from here! I am thrilled by how many of you are SO excited for this revamp, and I promise you it will be worth the wait…especially because I've chosen not to rush.

I could push to get this revamp out faster. I could neglect other things to focus on reviewing and tweaking BABs. I could push myself to work on it even when I'm not at my best…

But I won't. For several reasons, all of which I'm sharing with you today.

When you break it down to the essentials, there are only two things you need in order to start a bookkeeping business:

1. The technical skills to do the work, and

2. The ability to turn those skills into a business.

The second, most people understand. But the first…that one can be trickier.

A lot of people believe bookkeeping is one of those "fake-it-til-you-make-it" skills. But if there's one thing you take away from this podcast, let it be this…

It is not.

You cannot fake your way through bookkeeping…not ethically, anyway. And if you are running your bookkeeping business while doing a bad job of the books, i can sincerely, honestly tell you that I hope you get caught quickly.

You can truly hurt people if you try to do this work without a good grasp on your skills…which is why I created something to make sure bookkeepers get the help they need to make sure those skills are on point. Let's talk about BABs.
