Protecting Paradise Podcast

It’s TTT – Time to talk turtles! Today I’m joined with Wendy Johnston, Jane Hardwick, and Jerrica Wood to discuss the DOE’s Turtle Friendly Lighting project! Artificial light is a massive threat to turtle hatchling survival as they make their way to the sea. With all our condos and hotels casting high levels of artificial light onto beaches at night, it’s a navigational turtle mess!

Thank you again to these ladies, and the DOE, for allowing us to record in their facilities and for giving us a 101 on turtle friendly lighting!

For more information you can visit the DOE website at: https://doe.ky/marine/turtles/tfl/ and follow @doecayman on Instagram for more project updates!

Today we chat with Fred Burton, DoE Terrestrial Resources Unit Director and head man in charge of tackling the invasive cat situation here in the Cayman Islands. As cat control measures can be a controversial topic, Fred highlights their importance and outlines the impacts feral cats are having on our ecosystem and native species.

If you would like more information on this topic, you can visit the DoE Website for their frequently asked questions on cat control: https://doe.ky/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Feral-Cat-FAQ.pdf
