Hebrews 3 talks about how God’s people “hardened their hearts”. Although God spoke to them, they refused to listen and chose to go their own way. Similarly, we choose ourselves over God. We need to be surrounded by people who can point us back to Christ.

Jesus warns against this in Matthew 6. Following Jesus isn’t about checking the boxes of prayer, generosity, or other spiritual disciplines. The law and God’s dealings with His people throughout the Old Testament remind us of His holiness and our need for a Savior. The reality is that none of us can measure up on our own. As we continued in Matthew 5, we saw the good news: we don’t have to.

What is your view of Jesus? He is certainly the Savior who defeated sin and death, but is that all? We had the privilege of hearing Trent Marshall from Citylight South Lincoln with us. He preached on Matthew 5 where Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt preserves and light illuminates. As Christians, we are called to reflect Christ by preserving what is good and shining His truth in a broken world.
