  • Finding Purpose In A Godless World (Part Two) With Dr. Ralph Lewis
Ralph Lewis, MD, joins Eldon for a discussion setting theistic beliefs against the atheistic perspective. In his newest book, Finding Purpose in a Godless World, Lewis argues that religious beliefs are not necessary, indeed often even foolish, to find true meaning and purpose in life. He uses scientific findings to suggest how mind emerges from brain, how religious notions often disappoint believers, how evolution explains life itself, and more.
Dr. Lewis obtained his medical degree in 1990 at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, where he grew up. He completed specialty training in psychiatry at the University of Toronto in 1996, followed by a two year fellowship in neuroimaging research and a Master of Science in Neuroscience, both at the University of Toronto. He has held his present staff physician appointment at Sunnybrook since 1998.

  • Supernatural with Prof. Clay Routledge
Professor Clay Routledge joins Eldon to discuss the existential nature of human beings. We are all fully aware of our fragility, transience, and potential cosmic insignificance. Our ability to ponder the big questions about death and meaning and the anxiety that these questions can provoke have motivated us to be a species not only concerned about survival, but also about our significance. Supernatural is a book of apparent contradictions, insightfully reconciled.
Dr. Clay Routledge is an author, psychological scientist, consultant, public speaker, and professor. He studies basic psychological needs and how these needs influence wellbeing, physical health, and intergroup relations. Much of his research focuses on the need for meaning in life. More specifically, his research explores individual differences in the need for meaning, the underlying cognitive processes involved in meaning-making, the different ways people seek and maintain meaning, how the presence or absence of meaning influences health, wellbeing, social bonds, self-control, and goal pursuit, and how threats related to meaning impact intergroup relations.
He has published over 100 scholarly papers, co-edited two books on existential psychology, and authored the books Nostalgia: A Psychological Resource and Supernatural: Death, Meaning, and the Power of the Invisible World. He was the lead writer for the TED-Ed animated lesson Why Do We Feel Nostalgia?

  • The Silver Tsunami with Attorney Michael Lasky
What to do? If you own a business, you probably figure you will be able to sell it someday for a tidy sum. The problem is that you have about a 5% chance of selling if you didn’t plan for the sale years ago. It is believed that over the next 10 years, a trillion dollars’ worth of businesses will be up for sale. Mostly by boomers who want out. Most of these businesses will shut their doors without any buyers. The owners will lose, but a lot of employees will lose their jobs too.
Michael Lasky is a practicing patent and trademark attorney and founding partner of Altera Law Group and is also with Stoel Rives, a Seattle law firm. He is also an internationally recognized speaker on subject of making companies more valuable and profitable to investors or future sale and speaks four languages. In addition to his law degree, Michael has a degree in electrical engineering, is a published author of several books including his latest book, The Good Brand, a businessperson’s guide to building a brand centric company by focusing on the three rules of branding. The book is the companion to a training course called Brand Boot Camp. He also trains companies how to patent the future in a course called Disruptive Engineering™. Most companies obtain patents on what they are currently developing but fail to go for the home run: the idea which makes their company a survivor in times of great technological change.

  • The Soul Fallacy with Julien Musolino
Most Americans believe they possess an immaterial soul that will survive the death of the body. In sharp contrast, the current scientific consensus rejects the traditional soul, although this conclusion is rarely discussed publicly. In this book, a cognitive scientist breaks the taboo and explains why modern science leads to this controversial conclusion. In doing so, the book reveals the truly astonishing scope and power of scientific inquiry, drawing on ideas from biology, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and the physical sciences.
Julien Musolino, Ph.D., is a Franco-American cognitive scientist, public speaker, author, and professor at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, where he holds a dual appointment in the psychology department and the Center for Cognitive Science. Born and raised in France, Julien studied at the University of Geneva, in neighboring Switzerland, the University of North Wales, Bangor, in the United Kingdom, the University of Maryland, and the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous scientific articles, and is regularly invited to give lectures in the United States and around the world. The aim of Julien’s scientific work is to understand the functioning and development of aspects of the human mind such as language, reasoning, and critical thinking. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
