In the first episode of the PSN TTA "Victim Services Spotlights" series, CNA's Valerie Schmitt interviews East Baton Rouge Assistant District Attorney Melanie Fields and Renee Williams, the Executive Director for the National Center for Victims of Crime to discuss the lessons learned about victim services support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic created unprecedented challenges for victims of crime and victim service providers. Ms. Fields and Ms. Williams discuss the additional stressors that victims experienced, approached that criminal justice professionals implemented to engage and support victims, how organizations have embraced technology, and what strategies are likely to continue into the future.
In December 2019, through the PSN TTA program, strategic communications expert Laura McElroy conducted a strategic messaging assessment for the Shreveport (LA) Police Department. The goals of this assessment were to: (1) assess current communication practices and provide recommendations for strengthening and coordinating internal and external communications; and (2) to identify current agency approaches to strategic messaging and provide recommendations for establishing a consistent, agency-wide social media team approach. The Shreveport Police Department has already implemented several recommendations resulting from the assessment. In this episode, Shreveport Police Chief Ben Raymond joins Laura McElroy to discuss the results and impacts of the assessment.
