  • Applying to Graduate School in Psychology

    *No sponsored ads active*

Thinking of a career in Psychology? Then let’s get you into graduate school, shall we?

Since I have so many undergraduate college student listeners, in this episode I discuss the best ways to prepare for applying to graduate school, by starting early.  We will go through a typical list of what is required in the application process, by using my Alma mater, University of Houston Counseling Psychology program, as an example.  We will cover strategies to make you a better candidate, from the perspective of someone who was on both sides of the application process, as an applicant, and as a reviewer on selection committees.

Part 1 of the episode includes my take on current events, answering listener mail.

Part 2 begins the discussion about applying to graduate school, around 23:00 mark.

  • Anti-Asian Hate in America - My Take

    *No sponsored ads active*

In this unplanned, unscripted episode, I talk about my personal perspective about being a Canadian-born Taiwanese American Texan. I did not plan for this to include many academic subjects, but I couldn’t help myself - so follow along where I share many personal experiences, and talk (yes, we must talk about this) about what action we can take as individuals to create a better society for all of uS. Boy, that sounded lofty, eh?

  • College is where you should cheat? - About Academic Integrity

    *No sponsored ads active*

Okay, I admit that title is a bit provocative, but there’s a grain of truth to it, so listen to the episode for more!  The subject of Academic Integrity is the main focus, with some main takeaways from an Academic Integrity conference I recently attended.  I also dive into the subject of cheating from my perspective as an online instructor, and some advice for students, and mainly, why students should care.

Lastly, I declare a new initiative: “From Chegg to Chuang” as a mission for my own classes.

  • Catching up with listener mail

    *No sponsored ads active*

In this podcast, I catch up on listeners’ emails and tweets regarding a variety of subjects. Some topics covered, in no particular order: social psychology: attraction, proximity, attribution theory, fundamental attribution error, placebo effect, coping mechanisms, losing balance where coping can be harmful, karma - just world hypothesis - people get what they deserve.  I also gab about how to clean eyeglasses, and my bout with dysthymia.

  • Should I drop my class?

    *No sponsored ads active*

In this episode I give my usual ‘talk’ that I typically share with my students about what to consider when deciding to drop a course. I hope others may find this helpful when they are making this decision, usually as an undergraduate college student.

Note: An additional consideration I neglected to mention is whether you are dual credit high school student. Find out from your school how dropping your dual credit course affects your high school degree plan and transcript.

Welcome back, your host, Dr. Jack, here, survived the Texas winter storm!.  Yes, I have to talk about it, but slip in a few psychology concepts along the way.  I referred to coping styles, perceived lack of control, to the experience, as well as additional commentary.

Thanks for recent listener emails and tweets, your topic requests are in the queue!  Thanks again for listening!

  • Welcome to the DCU - Dr. Chuang’s Universe - Phase 1 (of 1?)

    *No sponsored ads active*

Hi friends, this is the first and maybe last DCU podcast, from a mentally exhausted person free associating for half an hour. Things I may have talked about in no particular order (hard to recall, given I’m writing this AFTER the podcast):

Hey I made a blog (under development!); impending winter doom; I’m not drinking I swear; we attended a pro-democracy march for Myanmar in Houston; my wife’s personality quirks; and apparently sponsoring products without sponsors; wait, I have FANS??

    Oh yeah, I mentioned:

  • How to be a Supportive Friend

    *No sponsored ads active*

This subject was in direct response to what is happening to our friends and family in the country of Myanmar. How can I, as a friend, provide support to them, knowing there’s little we can do to help in a tangible way?  Maybe I learned something in the process of earning a doctorate in Counseling Psychology that can be helpful in this situation.  We’ll see.

Near the end of the podcast, I respond to a couple of listener comments.
