In this podcast, I walk through the process of overcoming what in academic circles we call, “ABD” or All But Dissertation - that period of one’s academic career that feels like no man’s land, because you’re virtually graduated, except for this research paper. This also applies to those pursuing a master’s degree but are stuck on their thesis paper.
7 Steps to get unstuck:
Step 1: Acknowledge the emotional and psychological barrier
Step 2: Assess your current status (for graduate program and paper)
Step 3: Find support group or peer
Step 4: Reach out to committee chairperson
Step 5: Working on your dissertation
Step 6: Oral defense
Step 7: Buy me a coffee When you’re done!

In this episode I respond to a listener’s situation about living in India where the stigma of mental illness is very high, and how to deal with it. I turned on the mic and gave some of my thoughts about the issue of stigma, as well as some suggestions on self care. This is a common issue one would learn in a psychology course, especially in the field of clinical or counseling psychology. I also include some personal anecdotes, as usual. Don’t tell my in-laws, I kind of talk about them.

In this episode we explore the notion of the gap year, taking time off either after high school-pre-college, or after college - pre-professional life. A little brainstorming out loud about whether it’s a good fit for you.

Happy new year! Let’s discuss the notion of the new year’s resolution and why it is so difficult to succeed at them. I will examine this through the lens of a psychology educator, because that’s what I am, and see if psych 100 concepts can help us reach our goals.

This is my end of 2020 wrap up podcast, because everyone seems to have one of these, and I’m a conformist, okay? But seriously, I wanted to share my appreciation for anyone who listened to my podcast, in addition to my students, and reached out to me with questions and comments... a big THANK YOU! I have some ideas for 2021, and feel free to reach me with suggestions as well. Happy New Year!!
