August 01, 2020 Test of various voice recording apps on iPadOS for future podcast use.
I spent all this time testing various iPad voice apps, that I may as well publish it for the heck of it. Now that I’ve migrated from my old 2010 MacBook Pro as my main computer for online teaching, to a 2017 (10.5”) iPad Pro model, I wanted to try recording my future podcasts with my existing mic, a Samson Go USB mic, with this iPad. Let me list the hardware: Apple brand lightning to USB adaptor (often called camera adaptor) with 2 plugs, 1 USB-A female input and one lightning input for charging the iPad while using the adaptor. Then I have an Anker 3-in-1 USB Type C adaptor, with a USB Type C input for power, USB Type A input and HDMI output (note, haven’t tested the HDMI, assume one needs a lightning to HDMI to output video, not via the USB hub). There is a small USB type C female to USB type A male adaptor, to plug in this USB hub to the Apple adaptor mentioned earlier. The Samson Go Mic is plugged into the USB hub, and I am supplying power via USB type C cable to an Anker charger. The best voice recording app tested was the Hokusai 2 app (free, with in app purchase for more functionality), it outputs mpeg 4 audio, or uncompressed .wav files. The input volume sensitivity is high, so my voice is clear but it also picked up the static from the air conditioner which is fairly loud at the house.
