In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Todd Maguire, former law enforcement officer with the Queensland Police Service and author. Todd shares his story of trauma and resilience, starting with the unexpected suicide of his partner Karen. We discuss Todd's undercover police work as "Donny", the trauma he endured undercover, and how being undercover allowed him to avoid the suffering he was experiencing in his real life. Todd shares the impact of these traumas on his mental health and wellbeing and the steps he took to finally start to rebuild his life and tap into his resilience in the midst of his trauma and grief. We spoke about his book Donny: An Undercover Cop with a Death Wish and Todd provides words of encouragement to anyone who may be currently struggling with trauma or grief.

Lauren shares her own journey with an eating disorder and how she came to specialize in eating disorder work. We discuss her workbook, The Eating Disorder Recovery Reset and what inspired her to create it. Lauren discusses some myths when it comes to eating disorder recovery and the concept of ongoing recovery and what it may look like. We discuss lapses in recovery and what relapse prevention may look like. Lauren shares some skills and tools individuals can utilize after a lapse to help them get back on track with their recovery, as well as key tools and supports that are necessary for longevity in eating disorder recovery.

Juliette shares how Moxies is different from other social platforms and discusses the impact of social media on tween girls. We discuss how technology and social media be used for positive growth and engagement, rather than the negativity and harm and how we can foster confidence and emotional support in the digital age among our youth. Juliette speaks to the challenges parents face when it comes to raising kids in this digital age, including parent-child dynamics when it comes to navigating the online world. We end the episode with Juliette sharing one thing parents can do today to help their kids cultivate a healthier relationship with the digital world.

Dr. Romanoff ends by giving words of advice and encouragement to anyone experiencing feelings of jealousy, competition, or envy in any of their friendships.

In today's episode of Psych Talk I speak with Dr. Diana Sorrentino, PhD, a gender diversity and transgender subject matter expert, author, and host of the Paradoxes of Gender Podcast. Dr. D has spent over 40 years of research studying gender diversity and gender neurobiology and 36 years experience working with over 1000 gender diverse, gender variant, and transgender individuals. She starts the episode talking about how she started in the field and how her work has evolved over the past four decades. Dr. D describes for listeners what gender diversity is and some common misconceptions about gender diverse individuals. We discuss steps individuals can take to better understand gender diversity, especially family members of a loved one who is gender diverse. We discuss gender affirming care, what it entails, and what clinicians often miss when it comes to gender affirming care. Dr. D shares some steps we can take to better approach conversations about gender diversity with clarity, rather than being driven by fear. We end the episode by Dr. D providing words of advice and encouragement for any gender diverse individual who may be currently struggling.

We discuss the "diagnosis generation" and why more people are turning diagnostic labels into personal identities more frequently. We discuss Positive-Centered Psychology and how it helps with the identity crisis many people are facing. I start the episode by defining what "conversion therapy" is and discuss Supreme Court rulings that have brought conversion therapy to news headlines. I discuss tactics used in conversion therapy, as well as what the research says regarding effectiveness and outcomes. I discuss major medical and mental health organizations' positions on conversion therapy, as well as current conversion therapy bans for minors. I highlight criticisms of the recent Supreme Court ruling, as well as discuss ways that individuals can get involved in helping to ban this harmful practice.
