  • Innerlight: I Hate Roillercoasters

I’ve never really loved rollercoasters. They have their thrills, but I can’t say I enjoy the dramatic drops and intentional fear.

Lately, the rollercoaster I’ve been on has been a breakup one. I would really prefer not to experience every possible emotion within a week, but this is my life right now. One day, I am feeling positive about my life, accepting of my breakup, and motivated about the future. The next, I am despondent about the recent turn of events, terrified of the future, and utterly despairing that anything will ever end differently than this.

Innerlight: Gotta Get Those Clothes Off - Understanding Sexual Addiction

Sexual addiction is often referred to as compulsive sexual behaviour, hyper-sexuality, or having sexual dependency.

  • Innerlight Counselling: The Process Of Self-Sabotage

    What is self-sabotaging?

To explain self-sabotaging, people often refer to the example of ‘Deschapelles coup’. Alex Deschapelles was a French chess player who established himself as the champion of his region. However, as his competition grew stronger, he adopted a new strategy for all his matches. He chose to only compete if his opponent would remove one of Deschapelles’s pawns and make the first move, increasing Deschapelles odds for losing. If he would lose, he could simply blame the loss on his disadvantage, and no one would ever know the true limits of his abilities. In respect of this strategy, psychologists now use the term “Deschapelles coup” to refer to an act of self-sabotaging. It is called a coup because it basically means dethroning yourself, while forcing you to live in a self-inflicted exile in a made-up world, in which you never reach your full potential!

Many people can be so nervous about facing the realities and the consequences of real life challenges, that they resort to playing “games”. We change direction to avoid meeting people we owe money to, we avoid supervision meetings if we miss a deadline, and “youtube” becomes our default at times when we are most stressed about our work. The common theme here is a resistance to confront reality as it is. Like Deschapelles, we tend to come up with excuses and rationalizations that we can point to in the occurrence of failure. However, like Deschapelles, this tends to be a strategy to save face and not a strategy to create success..........
