Familial Ties

In October of 2019 I traveled alone to the Andean mountains of Peru to drink a potent psychedelic plant medicine known as ayahuasca. During the course of my travels I encountered a series of profoundly moving spiritual and emotionally healing experiences. Following is a piece of that magical journey captured to paper.

"I saw his dose of brew: it must have been 3 or 4 times larger than mine. I thought either my dose is so small that nothing is going to happen to me or his dose is so large that he is going to die tonight. Either way, he is going to meet God. I then proceeded to have the most cataclysmically intense, soul-altering experience of my life..."

This experience was deeply significant as it symbolized to me a moment of authentic masculine connection between male siblings and a father. My own communication with my father had been totally severed earlier in the year. My relationship with my father was, and remains, nonexistent and this was weighing heavily on me at the time of my journey. I feel that I was being shown that deep connections to other men are accessible, regardless of the wounds sustained in relation to my father. Sometimes this connection can even be found in a man who I had never met. Although the relationship and connection struck me more as brotherly, it felt like a lesson in fatherhood, brotherhood, masculinity, and love.

This guest needs no introduction for most listeners of this show, I am beyond excited to have one of my personal favorite content creators in this space: James W. Jesso!

•

James W. Jesso is an author, public speaker, and podcast host with a deep respect for psychedelic medicines. His work is inspired by his healing path through depression, substance abuse, and trauma, and focuses on translating the profound insights of the psychedelic experience into a higher quality of life, for both the individual and society.

As a creative entrepreneur, James has successfully utilized crowdfunding to independently publish two books, launch an interview-based podcast, and tour around the world both as a speaker and a researcher of psychedelic plants, cultures, and medicine. Although mostly in his home country of Canada, his more than one-hundred public speaking events since 2011 spans over eleven different countries. He has also authored numerous articles, essays, as well as having done radio, podcast, and print interviews.

His two books, Decomposing The Shadow: Lessons From The Psilocybin Mushroom (2013) and The True Light Of Darkness (2015), present a model for working with the ‘magic’ psilocybin mushroom as an ally in personal transformation and in developing psychospiritual maturity.

Adventures Through The Mind — his podcast and youtube channel — is an effort to contribute to the psychedelic culture at large. Featuring interviews with luminaries in science, art, and culture across a range of disciplines, this platform expands James’ work into a more broad exploration of progressive social developments, and the potential role psychedelics might play within them.

We have a fantastic show for you today featuring Andy Melder of Greenside Total Wellness LLC. Andy is a veteran Navy corpsman, founder and former member of the Texas chapter Veterans for Natural Rights, and an activist for the rights of vets to have access to the plant medicines they desperately need. We discuss his journey with the military and how entheogenic medicines and cannabis helped him avoid the all too common pitfall of pharmaceutical dependence. Andy is highly knowledgeable, experienced in the realm of entheogens, and an all around cool guy to talk. I think all Psychedelicasters are going to enjoy and learn a lot from our chat, coming up in just a moment.

We have a great show for you today featuring a lengthy interview with Maxwell Wieland. Max can best be described as a Huachumero, or a practitioner of sacred San Pedro Cactus medicine.

🌵

Max Wieland has an extensive background in personal practice with this cactus medicine, as well as experience in preparation of the sacrament and facilitation of it’s use. He has been working with this cactus for over a decade and has developed his own style of facilitation, namely utilizing heavy dosing, darkness, silence, and adjunct compounds such as psilocybin or DMT. His own developed practice stands in contrast to the often milder, daytime, ritual-heavy practice of the Mestizo/Christian influenced ceremonies common to Peru. Max is a former founder of the Peruvian retreat center “Munay Medicine” which offers various plant medicine retreats and is currently a figurehead in the Decriminalize Nature Pittsburgh movement. He is a talented visionary artist and founder of the Facebook group Wachuma Collective, which boasts over a thousand members.

🌵

Huachuma is a lesser-known shamanic medicine, but one that some consider the greatest of all plant teachers on the South American continent. The San Pedro cactus, or Trichocereus Peruvians, is comprised principally of the naturally occurring hallucinogen: mescaline. Though it has parallels to the iboga ceremonies of West Africa and the ayahuasca ceremonies of the Amazon, huachuma and the curanderos who use it originate in the Andes of Peru and surrounding regions.

🌵

According to Max, the earliest record of contact with this plant dates back 8,600 years, where specimens were found in a cave. It has been used as a sacrament by the Chavín culture on the west coast of South America for 3,000 years. The Chavín produced many sacred designs of a deity clutching the distinctive cactus, making it one of the oldest recorded psychedelic medicines on the planet. Its use today extends into northern Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador, where seldom few curanderos practice in the original Chavín tradition.
