Invisible Crisis on the Transgender Community | Webinar (April 5th)

The Transgender Day of Visibility or TDOV is an annual observance held on March 31st to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness about the discrimination and challenges they face. Transgender individuals and those who identify as LGBTQIA+ often experience higher rates of mental health issues, and increased rates of poverty, unemployment, and homelessness compared to the general population. This is largely due to the discrimination, stigma, and lack of acceptance they may face in society.

Our goal in this webinar is to deepen our understanding of these issues and explore ways in which we can support the transgender community in its fight for equality and dignity. We will hear from a range of experts and activists, who will share their insights, experiences, and strategies for advocacy and allyship.

When it comes to mental health, women are especially vulnerable for various reasons. There are certain things that make women more likely to experience mental health problems. Statistically speaking, they are almost twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety.

Infertility affects about 10-15% of individuals of reproductive age. While couples cant control all the causes of infertility, they can control eating habits. Couples can experience significant anxiety and emotional distress and it takes a heavy toll on their Mental Health

I had the honour of speaking with the founder of Advica Health and Psymood partner Kevin Brady, about his journey to Advica Health and the importance of having Workplace Mental Health Support. This is a very profound discussion since the world is getting back to work!

Meet Joshua Dvorkin!

A Registered Psychotherapist under supervised practice. Joshua has certifications in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and is currently becoming a certified trauma professional (CCTP & CCTP-II). Joshua is familiar with treating many types of disorders including anxiety related disorders, depressive disorders, stress related disorders, and more clinical types of disorders such as bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, psychosis, and others.

Honouring over 15 years as a social worker/youth worker, Katie merges the traditional psychology/coaching practices with spiritual healing mediums to create a unique approach to those seeking an alternative to recovery, growth and healing on all levels. Katie works in 1:1 and group settings. Her work in these areas of mental health access points within the Durham Region and Toronto/GTA has earned her multiple award nominations to include the WOI nomination for Women of Inspiration back to back for 2020 and 2021.

Recently Katie's private practice was awarded a Diamond (First Place) Reader's Choice Awards for 2021. Coming to the mat as a student over 15 year ago to heal her own physical and emotional trauma, Katie became 200 YTT certified in 2014. Since 2017, Katie has established her connection to understanding the healing capacity of trauma when merged with yoga, mindfulness and healing mediums. This has led to collaborations via yoga and mindfulness with the Military community of Trenton, First Responder Teams across Kingston, Durham, Kawartha Lakes and Collingwood (Ontario) and recently with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences located just outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Im so excited to speak with Tiffany Sparrow regarding the power of music and the healing properties of it.

Tiffany Sparrow offers her sound in distinct and unique ways. In concert settings, she weaves a dulcet, relaxed ambiance into her folk-pop original tunes, along with world music and carefully curated covers. Soundbath journeys combine guided meditation with sound frequency to promote deep rest and relaxation. Kirtan group chanting communal singing events accessing the devotional yoga of sound. Tiffany is also an accredited music therapist (MTA), specializing in supporting clients in medical settings, neurology and palliative care, using music and organic vocal expression to rehabilitate emotional and physical trauma, speech and movement.

Tiffany completed her music therapy training at Wilfrid Laurier. She also has her Master of Arts in ethnomusicology (MA) through the University of Alberta, and her thesis research focused on the health implications of group chanting (kirtan). She has presented at several conferences, worked on research teams and has taught a Music Therapy elective course for four terms at the University of Alberta through St. Stephen’s College. She is a skilled yogi and has taught and studied yoga and mantra in Canada and in India since 2004 and obtained her 500-hour certificate through Akhanda Yoga and Yogrishi Vishvketu and co-facilitating dozens of yoga teacher trainings.

I was honoured and privileged to host and speak with 2 amazing humans about their own personal struggles and what they found helpful during their coming out journey. This is a wonderful heartwarming talk, and one that we are free to speak our thoughts and minds in a safe space.
