In this podcast episode, Dr. Gina Fick PT, ScD, FAAOMPT interviews her long-time friend and mentor, Dr. Jean-Michel Brismée, PT, ScD, OCS, FAAOMPT. Dr. Brismee is a professor in the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences Programs at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Brismée teaches at TTUHSC in the areas of neuromusculoskeletal care and is involved in clinical research in Orthopaedics, Manual Therapy, and Movement Sciences. He has instructed over 100 courses and conferences nationally and internationally in advanced Orthopaedic Medicine and Manual Therapy of the spine and extremities and has published over 150 papers in the peer-reviewed literature. He is the program director of the International Academy of Orthopaedic Medicine – United States (IAOM-US) fellowship program in orthopedic manual therapy. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy and maintains a clinical practice in outpatient orthopedics at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Dr. Gina Fick and Dr. Brismée discuss the value of mentorship and its impact on the physical therapy profession, as well as the importance of mentorship in preventing burnout and improving patient outcomes. They also explore the challenges and changes in physical therapy education from the COVID-19 pandemic to now, as well as the significance of maintaining a sense of community and networking in the physical therapy profession. Dr. Brismée emphasizes the importance of being a complete clinician, incorporating manual therapy, movement-based therapy, and effective communication with patients.
