PTP: The Practical Training Podcast

This week we sat down with Mr. Josh Logan of Guardian Training and Consulting on the Practical Training Podcast.

Josh brings over a decade of Law Enforcement, Military, and practical training experience to the table to discuss his approach and philosophy.

Josh is the first instructor we have had on that uses technology, an understanding of the nervous system, and sports medicine to affect his training; he literally uses a pulse-ox meter during his training to monitor heart rate.

His training belief is that of Bruce Lee's: "A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself." 

Josh's three fundamentals:

Be a good person; know when to push the envelope and when not to.

The best fight we can have is the one we don't fight at all.

Continue your training; training is not a one time event, it is a journey. 

Josh is also one of the instructors that teaches concealed carry training in a state with constitutional carry. We get in to why that matters.

Zee joins us from Tennessee to share why and how he got into firearms and self-defense training.

Zee shares how he avoids the ego contest in training, and how he tries to connect with stubborn students.

In this episode we are joined in studio by the great Tara "The Tiny Terror" Graff.

Tara is a professional MMA fighter under contract with Bellator MMA  and a Self-Defense coach helping people to prepare for the unexpected.

Tara joins us to discuss why she got into MMA and why she decided to start teaching other women how to defend themselves.

Tara talks about jumping: how scary it was to fully commit to MMA and leave the day job behind.

As I like to say, there are no losses, only lessons. We win or we learn. I ask Tara about her favorite loss and what she gained from it.

Tara's favorite student: has drive to do the uncomfortable and is a hard worker willing to put in the work.  

We at PTP believe in self-reliance and encourage our students to become their own first responders. As such, we are working with Tara "The Tiny Terror" Graff to offer women's only self-defense courses several times through the rest of the year. This week we are honored to talk with Mr. Spencer Keepers of Keepers Concealment and Awareness Defense Training.

Spencer has been in the firearms industry for around 30 years and is still going strong.

He is the founder of Keepers Concealment, where he has designed and patented the holsters that earned him the title of Prince and High Master of AIWB (appendix inside the waistband) from Massad Ayoob.

Today we are joined by Brian Wang. He ​is the Chief Instructor of Monarch Defense out in the Bay Area of California.

 

Brian is, simply put, a bad ass in the Firearms Instruction arena.

And he is also certified to teach the Use of Chemical Agents for Self-Defense.

 

Brian is a voice for defending the 2nd Amendment in one of the most liberal states in the nation.

He was recently defending the 2nd Amendment on NBC Bay Area discussing what San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo got wrong with the new policies his city council is pushing through. As Brian puts it, he is operating 'Behind Enemy Lines".

 

Brian Wang has one of the best approaches to Firearms Instruction I have seen.

He takes a philosophical approach to firearms instruction, combined with technical and tactical expertise, to deliver a well-rounded educational experience. This leaves his students with an understanding of not just marksmanship, but how to understand and decompose a threat.

 

Brian says that "guns are simple, primitive, predictable machines. Let’s instead understand human on human conflict, the relationship of predator and prey, and the violence that sick and selfish men commit upon the innocent."

 

He has adopted the ancient Chinese proverb 'pour out your cup'.
