Punch Drunk TV

We took a week off and now we're back, a day early! Why? Well, long story short: Aaron's life has been super crazy and he's heading off to Budapest this week for a set visit. Living the high life, or something.

Enough small talk, let's get into it.

Welcome to Episode 95.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

We took a week off but now we're back ... and badder than ever!

How is it that after one week of not recording, there seems to be even more TV shows we are behind on? Is it even possible to stay up to date on everything when a new show is constantly premiering? Damn, do you remember how shitty TV entertainment used to be before LOST, Mad Men and Breaking Bad? Well, do you?

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• "The Walking Dead" Season 8 finale brought in 7.9 million viewers — it was the highest rated show of the night, but it was the show's lowest-rated finale since Season 1 — which was watched by 6 million people.
• Carey Elwes and Jake Busey have joined the cast of "Stranger Things" for Season 3. According to Deadline, Elwes will be playing Larry Kline, the mayor of Hawkins, who was described as “A classic, 80’s style slick politician. Pathetic and driven only by his own interests. The studio is looking for a male, aged from 40s-60s, to fill the role." Busey will be playing a character named Bruce, who was described as “a morally compromised news reporter in his 50s” who is “outwardly sexist, overweight and bedraggled.”
• Idris Elba is going to Netflix. The service has handed out a straight-to-series, eight-episode order for half-hour entry "Turn Up Charlie," an original comedy created by, starring and exec produced by the "Luther" Emmy nominee. According to THR, "Elba will star in the comedy as Charlie, a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend's problem-child daughter."
• Comedy Central confirms that Season 5 of "Broad City" will be its final season. Smart move going out on their terms. And with the recent announcement that Amazon is developing an "A League of Their Own" TV series — with Abbi Jacobson co-writing and executive producing — it looks like she'll be keeping busy. I wonder if Alana is good at sports?
• Nat Geo says Season 3 of its series "Genius" will be about Mary Shelley. Season 2, which is about Pablo Picasso, premieres on Tuesday, the 24th.
• ABC has once again ordered a 13-episode spinoff to "The Goldbergs." It's currently untitled and will be taking place in the '90s.

RECENT RENEWALS & CANCELLATIONS:

• HBO has renewed "Barry" for Season 2.
• CBS renewed "Blue Bloods," "Bull," "Hawaii Five-0," "MacGyver," "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "NCIS: New Orleans."
• Hulu has renewed "I Love You America"
• Sundance has renewed "This Close"
• CBS has taken "Living Biblically" off its lineup, basically canceling the series.
• NBC has taken "Taken" off its schedule, basically canceling the series.
• Netflix has canceled "Seven Seconds" after one season.

Welcome to Episode 93.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

It's been a few days since Jack has had anything to drink and he broke that streak in this episode. You've been warned.

On the flipside, Aaron came into the episode already a bit tipsy off of some odd blue drink from FX's "Legion" Chamber Experience going on in Hollywood this weekend. Let's party!

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS:

• Donald and Stephen Glover are no longer working on FX's "Deadpool" animated series. After the news hit, Glover released his entire script for the pilot online
• 18 million people tuned into "Roseanne" when it returned to TV on Tuesday. And in a speech in Ohio on Tuesday, which was supposed to be about infrastructure, Donald Trump ended up taking the credit for those ratings.
• Stormy Daniels' 60 Minutes interview brought the show's highest ratings in 10 years — that's 22 million viewers
• Steven Spielberg came out against Netflix movies being nominated for Oscars. If it's released in the TV format, it should be considered a TV movie and only be considered for Emmys. Do we agree?

Welcome to Episode 92.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

Hey Clinkers. How are you? It's raining in L.A. So ... thoughts and prayers to all the displaced snails ...

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• The "Stranger Things" cast just got huge pay raises. Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin all will go from about $30,000 per episode to somewhere between $200,000 and $250,000. Millie Bobby Brown’s bump was apparently even bigger, but Deadline doesn’t offer specifics. David Harbour and Winona Ryder are making somewhere “north of $300,000" after their own salary bumps. Series regulars Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton are only making between $100,000 and $150,000, which seems low for how important they are to the series, but they both got overshadowed by Joe Keery during season two.
• Kathy Bates will return for Season 8 of "American Horror Story" because, duh. Ryan Murphy revealed at PaleyFest: “Kathy and Sarah Paulson have a lot of great stuff to get to do. So, with Evan Peters, the three of them are the leads this year.”
• John Constantine will become a series regular on DC's "Legends of Tomorrow." That is if The CW renews the show for a fourth season.
• NBC has given an extended order for more "Will & Grace" episodes this season. The network already ordered a second season before the reboot's premiere and just ordered a third season (or 11th season, if you're keeping track).
• Jerry O'Connell has been cast as Sheldon's older brother Georgie on "The Big Bang Theory" and will appear in the Season 11 finale
• Netflix has secured the international rights to all of the Monty Python movies as well as many TV series including "Flying Circus." The content will launch in the UK and Canada on Sunday, April 15, and begin streaming in America later this year.

AARON'S LOSERS: "The Woods: Tales of The X Species Volume 1," "X-Files" and "Krypton"
JACK'S LOSERS: "Instinct" and "War Games"
AARON'S FENCERS: "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Station 19" and "On My Block"
JACK'S FENCERS: "Krypton," "Darling in the FRANXX," "Genius Junior" and "Gotham"
AARON'S WINNERS: "SNL," "The Walking Dead," "Wild Wild Country" and "Last Man On Earth"
JACK'S WINNERS: "On My Block," “Last Man On Earth” and Bill Hader ... just, Bill Hader. Put him on EVERY SHOW!

Welcome to Episode 91.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

Hey guys, it's been a rough week. So instead of filling this intro with some sort of witty small talk, we're just going to ask that you head over to iTunes and review/rate the show if you like what you hear. We love you.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• "The Walking Dead's" Season 8 finale and Season 4 premiere of "Fear the Walking Dead" — aka the series' first-ever crossover episode — will hit 750 theaters nationwide on April 15 in what Fathom Events is calling "Survival Sunday"
• Thanks to the success of "The White Queen" and "The White Princess," Starz has put the third installment into production. Based on Philippa Gregory's series of books, the newest series is "The Spanish Princess" which "returns viewers to the world of royal court intrigue as seen uniquely through the perspective of the women, but also sheds light on a previously untold corner of history — the lives of people of color, living and working in 16th century London."
• Hulu is developing a series about the "Satanic Panic" of the late '80s and early '90s. The series is called "Demons," and according to THR, the drama will "revolve around Marilyn Jones, the seductive "patient zero" in the frenzy surrounding satanic ritual abuse, and her husband, Bennett Lewis, a brilliant but manipulative psychiatrist. In success, each season of Demons would explore a twisted crime affected by the couple's dark exploration into the fragile nature of memory and guilt."
• MTV is expanding its "TRL" franchise to add late night and morning editions of the program.
• Nerdist reported on a rumor that FOX may be interested in rebooting "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Of course, it's just a rumor but would this even be a good idea?

QUESTION: After watching "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil's" sophomore seasons, I have to wonder, Is there a Season 2 curse for Netflix's Marvel shows?

AARON'S LOSERS: "The Pizza Show," "Deception," "American Idol" and "Rise"
JACK'S LOSERS: "Nailed It," "The Simpsons" and "American Idol"
AARON'S FENCERS: "Nailed It," "For the People" and "The Walking Dead"

Welcome to Episode 90.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

In Episode 89 of Punch Drunk TV, Jack and Aaron discuss a very important topic: Their rekindled Tori Amos fandoms. Seriously, it's overtaken everything ... but only '90s Tori.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• Barack and Michelle Obama are in early talks with Netflix to produce a new global series for the platform. The deal is said to be focused on a series that would highlight inspirational stories, not anything to serve as a direct rebuttal to current President Donald Trump or his policies.
• Bronson Pinchot, aka Balki from "Perfect Strangers," has been cast as a recurring character in Netflix's "Sabrina" series. Pinchot will recur as George Hawthorne, "Baxter High's villainous, puritanical principal. He is a constant thorn in Sabrina's side and is always trying to thwart her escapades."
• Disney Jr is working on a new "Rocketeer" animated series. This time, the story will follow Kit: “a young girl who receives a surprise package on her birthday revealing she’s next in line to become the Rocketeer, a legendary superhero who has the ability to fly with the help of a rocket-powered jetpack.” Assisting Kit with her adventures will be “her gadget-minded best friend, Tesh, and airplane mechanic uncle, Ambrose.”
• Jon Favreau has been tapped to write and executive produce a live-action "Star Wars" TV series that'll air exclusively on Disney's yet-to-launch standalone streaming service
• 26.5 million people tuned in to the Oscars on Sunday, making it the lowest rated event in the awards show's history.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Do the Oscars still matter?

Welcome to Episode 88.
As always, #ClinktheDrink.

Another week, another episode. We're still in the midst of Olympics mayhem, which means a lot of shows have yet to return or premiere. But that'll change soon. Until then, uh ... what's your favorite brunch food?

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• "The Walking Dead" star Lauren Cohan has yet to renew her contract for Season 9. She's not necessarily leaving the show but has been grappling with AMC over less-than-satisfactory salary offers. She has just been cast as the lead in a new ABC pilot called "Whiskey Cavalier." The show would star "Scandal's" Scott Foley and is described as a "high-octane hourlong action dramedy that follows the adventures of tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: "Whiskey Cavalier") who, following an emotional breakup, is assigned to work with badass CIA operative Francesca "Frankie" Trowbridge (codename: "Fiery Tribune"). Together, they lead an interagency team of flawed, funny, heroic spies who periodically save the world (and each other) while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics."
• CBS is rebooting "L.A. Confidential" as a TV series. Walton Goggins will star as "Detective Jack Vincennes, who is described as all swagger and flash with a movie-star smile. He knows how the system works and uses it to his best advantage, including some corrupt shakedowns on the side." Kevin Spacey played the role in the 1997 movie.
• CBS cast it's new "Magnum P.I." Thomas Magnum will be played by Jay Hernandez, who is a Mexican American. He previously played Dimitri Havelock in "The Expanse" and Daniel Acosta in Fox's short-lived series "Gang Related."

• Fox News is launching a streaming service called "Fox Nation" in late 2018 and will be targeted towards the network's "super fans"

Welcome to Episode 87.

As always, #ClinktheDrink.

Hey Clinkers, Happy Valentine's Week! To continue the lovefest, we want to know who is your TV crush? Could be a celebrity ... or even the character they played. Inquiring minds want to know ...

This episode finds Aaron a bit loopy after a long day doing some bizarre background acting on a Disney Channel TV show. He was pelted with yogurt and ended up dressing as a Mexican Wrestler. So basically, he's sleep-deprived and drinking. Welcome to CrazyTown!

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK:

• Ryan Murphy is moving from 20th Century Fox to Netflix. His new five-year deal will pay the man $300-million dollars and goes into effect July 1st. Murphy will continue to serve as an exec producer on FX's "American Horror Story," "American Crime Story," "Feud," "Pose" and Fox's "911."
• In its first three days, "The Cloverfield Paradox" had 2.8 million viewers — which is one-fourth the size of the audience for "Bright," which brought in roughly 11-million dollars in its first three days on the platform.
• "The Daily Show's" Michelle Wolf — basically the best correspondent on "The Daily Show" during the Trevor Noah years — has signed on for her own late-night show on Netflix. It'll premiere later this year.
