This episode, I spoke with Punchy O'Guts of 4EYES Coaching + Publications. Punchy is invested in using positivity, compassion, and forward-thinking to connect with, challenge, and inspire athletes. Punchy has published FIVE manuals for training those in roller derby as well as several articles in Five on Five Magazine.
This conversation focuses on a curriculum for safely returning to training on the track. What should we watch for? How do we know when our skaters are ready for the next stage? (apart from WFTDA guidelines, of course)
Then we turn to the topic of Inclusive Coaching. To quote Punchy's blog: "Coaches have an incredible amount of power. It’s so important to acknowledge the power we have and use our leadership role to make derby culture more inclusive and safe. We can make intentional decisions so that our behavior, decisions, and language are not focused on creating a space that is only safe for white, cis folks. We must actively choose to create a space that is inclusive and safe for marginalized folks."
