🎙Puppet Podcast #89-Dik Downey, Clown, Puppeteer, Co-founder Pickled Image + Opposable Thumb Theatre 👉Clown and puppeteer who toured all around Europe. He was the co-director of Pickled Image, now runs Opposable Thumb Theatre based in Bristol, England. Designer and puppet maker for 34 years, he makes commissions and produces his own puppets    Dik started his performing life at Glastonbury festival in 1983, painted yellow, playing kazoo whilst someone lay on a bed of broken cornflakes. He then ran away with the hippies, travelling through Europe as a crap juggler, fire-eater, cabaret artiste, escapologist and clown. Dik eventually returned to the UK to train (briefly) at Fool Time Circus School, eventually finding his natural home with renowned anarchic, Dada-esque street theatre company Desperate Men. A few years later, he was lured in from the cold by Green Ginger, performing and making for their shows ‘Slaphead’, ‘P.R.A.T.S’ and ‘Frank Einstein: Rewired’.  In 2000, Dik co-founded puppetry & theatre company, Pickled Image. Over the next 19 years, Dik conceived, designed, constructed and performed in most of their highly successful shows. He also makes puppets and masks for other companies and even finds time to teach puppet making at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

🎙 Puppeteer and actor from England for Netflix's Dark Crystal 👉 Dave has a wealth of experience from writing and performing film and tv puppet characters for 25 years. Most recently, he was one of the principal puppeteers on the Star Wars franchise movies and Netflix’s new The Dark Crystal - Age of Resistance series.   

Dave Chapman is a British actor and puppeteer who was an additional performer on Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets Most Wanted and 101 Dalmatians. In 2011, he was an assistant puppeteer for Animal during an appearance on The X Factor.  

More recently, Chapman played Dougie Colon, Eddie Watts, and others in the Jim Henson Company and BBC co-production That Puppet Game Show. Chapman joined Brian Henson on stage for Brian Henson's "Evolution of Puppetry" lectures at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival and has guested in the Henson Alternative improv show "Puppet Up!"  

Chapman graduated from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in 1992 and was trained at the Jim Henson Company's puppeteering workshop in 1994. His tutors were Kevin Clash, Nigel Plaskitt, and Rob Tygner. Afterwards, Chapman performed various puppet characters for British TV; such as BBC presenters Otis the Aardvark and Vinnie the Ferret. He has also performed Tiny of Tiny and Mr Duk, Scratch on Nuzzle and Scratch, Windy on Space Pirates and as double for Victor Yerrid on Jim Henson Company's "Pajanimals". Chapman also worked with Brian Herring as the on-set puppeteers for the droid BB-8 in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  Chapman's acting credits includes the BAFTA Award winning shows The Slammer and Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow (in the latter, he played over 200 characters). He also provided Dalek voices in the 1999 special Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death.

 👉Puppeteer from British Colombia, he worked on numerous Muppet productions and on the Canadian version of Sesame Street, where he performed a role regularly for nine seasons.  He is also a Gemini Award winner for best preschool puppet performance.   

Tim Gosley’s four decades in puppetry have included a wide spectrum of projects. He was the festival director for Puppets for Peace in Victoria, B.C. He is a Gemini Award winning puppeteer on TV series including The Muppets,  Fraggle Rock, and was Basil Bear for nine years on Canadian Sesame Street. He creates his own shows for both families and adults in different techniques including LED shadows; low-tech live video projections; object manipulation; and Muppet-style manipulation. The content ranges from children’s shows like “The Ugly Duckling”, which toured German, the UK, Austria, Taiwan and across Canada, to the avant-garde including Michael McClure’s 60’s hallucination “The Meatball.” Since moving to Victoria in 2008, he started building giant puppets.  As a maker and designer, he has created giant puppets for The City of Victoria, Theatre Terrific, and Puppets for Peace.  His latest suitcase performance is with Runaway Moon Theatre’s project, “How did you get here?” Under development is “Le Bloke de North Hatley” based on his years living in Quebec.

👉Performing thousands of shows behind Applefun Puppetry for nearly 20 years, from libraries, schools, and birthday parties, he knows how to create a high degree of audience participation with a spontaneous flavour as he studied Improvisational Comedy at Second City.  Mike Harding (Chief Puppeteer) has been constructing puppets and studying the art of puppetry since the late 80's. His earliest shows took place on his sister's farm. Since then, he has performed for such clients as Costco, Ikea and Chapters. Mike is a member of The Puppeteers of America, The Ontario Puppetry Association, and The Puppetry Guild of Peel. He has also studied Improvisational Comedy at Second City, which adds a unique and spontaneous flavor to his shows.  Since 1997, Applefun Puppetry has been performing its hilarious brand of entertainment throughout Ontario. Whether it's a birthday party or an annual company event, Applefun will be there to make sure the kids are having fun. 🎙 Ann & David Powell, Founders of Puppetmongers Theatre in Ontario, Canada  

👉The siblings team celebrating 46 years of their artistic vehicle, Puppetmongers Theatre. Performed across Canada, US, Europe and Iran. Winners of several awards for their work, including 5 Citations for Excellence from UNIMA-USA.  Since Ann Powell and David Powell founded Puppetmongers in 1974, the company has become internationally recognized as a leader and innovator in the field of puppetry. So far we have created a dozen new plays for both young and general audiences, which have earned us and our collaborators a mass of awards.  

We continue to develop new work on our own and also in collaboration with others, and we host an annual conference called Fresh Ideas in Puppetry for established and emerging artists to share their passion and expertise in puppetry.  In 1996, we started The Toronto School of Puppetry to share our creative approach and provide a collaborative learning space for the puppetry community, and for multi-disciplinary artists interested in expanding their theatrical palette. We also work with students from elementary school up to the post-graduate level.  

Puppetmongers Theatre was established by the sister and brother Co-Artistic Director team of Ann Powell and David Powell.  Since the inception of Puppetmongers, we have been dedicated to new play development and to maintaining our repertoire of original shows, now twelve in number.  We create work for family and school audiences, such as Cinderella in Muddy York, a retelling of the classic fairy tale set in 19th century Canada; we also develop work for adults, such as our very successful productions of The Pirate Widow Cheng and Charles Dickens’ Hard Times, which received nominations for three Dora Mavor Moore Awards between them.  Puppetmongers has performed throughout Canada and the US, as well as in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and Iran and, since 1990, we have been presenting our Annual Winter Holiday Tradition of performances for family audiences in Toronto.

🎙Jeghetto, self taught artist, puppeteer, puppet builder and performer 

👉Infused with Hip Hop culture, he worked with Missy Elliott, Pharrell Williams, Alec Baldwin and received of 2 grants from the Henson Foundation. He does puppet workshops for all ages online.  Tarish Pipkins a.k.a. Jeghetto, was born in a small steel mill town called Clairton, PA located south of Pittsburgh, PA. He is a self taught artist and has been creating art from a very young age. As a teenager, he moved to the East Side of Pittsburgh and graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. In the late 90’s Tarish joined the BridgeSpotters Collective and became known for his Live paintings and Poetry. He was also a Barber for over 20 years. He moved to North Carolina in 2005 where he launched his career in Puppetry. There, he fine tuned his skills by doing street performances with his puppets. In 2008 he started working with Paperhand Puppet Intervention. He has built puppets and performed in several Paperhand productions. Most recently, Jeghetto had the pleasure to work with national recording artist, Missy Elliott on her music video, WTF ( Where They From) controlling the Pharell puppet and doing some puppet building. He also worked on the Amazon Echo commercial featuring Missy Elliott and Alec Baldwin as puppets. Tarish is a former teacher at Just Right Academy, a private alternative school for children with special needs. Tarish is married and a proud father of five children. Jeghetto’s passion is promoting Oneness through the magic of Puppetry.

He has toured nationally and abroad since earning his BFA from The Boston Conservatory at Berklee. He is a Culture Push Fellow, and Queens Council on the Arts Community Engagement Commissioning grant recipient for his project Co-written, which involves collaborative songwriting with young people of color. He is dedicated to working collaboratively with marginalized communities toward an empowering self-actualization through theater and music.
