  2. Number 2: Lizzie Borden: The Real Story Behind Netflix’s Monster

Lizzie Borden: The Real Story Behind Netflix’s Monster Lizzie Borden has been one of America’s most infamous murder suspects for more than 130 years. On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered inside their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Their daughter Lizzie was eventually arrested, tried, and acquitted — but the questions surrounding that shocking case have never truly disappeared. Now, with Netflix bringing the Lizzie Borden story back into the spotlight with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, Pure Malice takes a fresh look at the real events behind one of history’s most notorious murder cases. What actually happened inside the Borden house that morning? Where was Lizzie when her father and stepmother were killed? Why did her answers change? What did the household servants see and hear? And what did witnesses like Bridget Sullivan, John Morse, Alice Russell, and Dr. Seabury Bowen tell investigators? In this episode, we go beyond the familiar “40 whacks” story and dig into the details that can get lost in the legend — the inquest, the investigation, Lizzie’s conflicting accounts, the physical evidence, the circumstances surrounding the murders, and the testimony that would eventually become part of the prosecution’s case. We’ll also take a closer look at the world Lizzie lived in: Victorian mourning customs, Fall River society, the Borden family home, and the strange circumstances surrounding the days leading up to and immediately following the murders. More than a century later, the question remains: Did we ever really know what happened inside the Borden house? The legend of Lizzie Borden has been told countless times. This time, we're going back to the evidence, the testimony, and the historical record — and taking a fresh look at a classic case. This is the real story behind Lizzie Borden, Part 1.

  5. Number 5: The Lake Waco Murders: A Local Nightmare, Part 5

In the final chapter of our Lake Waco Murders: A Local Nightmare series, we return to the questions that have followed this case for decades. What happened to evidence that may still have held answers? Why did certain leads fade while others became the foundation of the prosecution’s story? And what do you do when the legal system says a case is over, but the facts still refuse to feel settled? Years after Jill Montgomery, Raylene Rice, and Kenneth Franks were murdered near Lake Waco, people connected to the case were still searching for clarity. Advances in DNA testing seemed capable of reopening doors that had once been closed, but gaining access to the evidence brought a new set of complications. Even the location, condition, and control of key items became part of the mystery. Then there are the details that seem almost impossible to explain away. The truck once linked to the case followed a strange path after the trials. Other possible suspects were identified through witness statements, police files, and questionable alibis. And while some of those theories reached the courtroom, they never made it to a jury. Meanwhile, the evidence used to secure the convictions continued to face serious scrutiny. Jailhouse informants, recantations, bite mark testimony, alleged undisclosed evidence, and claims of coerced statements all became part of a much larger question: was the state’s case supported by reliable proof, or did the investigation begin narrowing before the truth had been fully explored? In the final episode, we examine the people who refused to stop asking questions, the families left navigating uncertainty, and a later legal effort that attempted to bring the case back before the State of Texas. But in a system governed by strict legal pathways, raising disturbing questions does not always lead to the scrutiny they deserve, and legal barriers can prevent the evidence and allegations from ever receiving a full hearing. Was this a solved triple murder surrounded by decades of controversy? Or did tunnel vision, unreliable forensic science, and missed opportunities shape the outcome from the beginning? Join us for the conclusion of Pure Malice’s The Lake Waco Murders: A Local Nightmare, Part 5 deep dive. This final episode explores the unresolved evidence, wrongful-conviction claims, alternate theories, and legal barriers that continue to make the murders of Jill Montgomery, Raylene Rice, and Kenneth Franks one of the most debated true crime cases in Waco, Texas. We also highlight the work of the Innocence Project of Texas and share the missing person case of Justin Weldon O’Brien, who disappeared from Waco in 2002. Because even after decades, one overlooked detail can still matter. 🎙️ Remember... it's not just true crime.
