Let’s talk about Jake Paul and his upcoming fight against Tyron Woodley.
In one corner we have a YouTube Star turned “boxer”. He claims boxing saved his life, gave him purpose, he also claims that he is this generations Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, or even Muhammad Ali. Struck with a little delusion and arrogance the problem is these self proclaimed comparisons come with a track record that for any real boxing fan doesn’t hold any real weight YET. He’s had a total of 4 fights 1 amateur fight and 3 professional bouts. The massive lie in his comparison is he hasn’t taken on opponents that even hint at the resemblance of the type of boxers he’s tryin to equate himself to. He has not fought a real boxer yet. Unfortunately the hype and scandals being generated around the Paul brothers is what is allowing him to sort of crack the code of being able to play at boxing and he is Buying himself a place into the boxing world. This is not the first time we see unconventional characters throughout the history of the sport and clearly it won’t be the last. We’ve all started to see an obvious pattern in what Jake Paul tends to do when promoting an upcoming fight…every presser or weigh in has to have some sort of drama or outrageous out of the ordinary twist like taking Floyd Maywethees cap or someone running their mouth to someone’s mom it’s all seems to be just one big circus or show. He likes to play head games, he attempts to bend people’s minds and get into their heads before a fight. Everything seems to be a joke to Jake Paul, his behavior along with his comments are outrageous and unstable.
Jake Pauls opponent is Tyron Woodley he’s a retired UFC fighter with a 19-7-0 record. 7 of those bouts were knockouts, and impressive ones at that. What makes Tyron Woodley great is his drive, his hunger to fight, not to mention his speed and explosive power. What we don’t know is if that will translate from MMA and into the boxing ring. We’ve seen what is possible when Tyron Woodley is firing on all cylinders. Based on his performances in his MMA + UFC career I feel like he is very capable of delivering on fight night. What I like most about Woodley is his no nonsense approach, and the respect he has for not only his career but also the sport of boxing. Woodley did however lose his last 4 bouts which cued his exit from the UFC.But even Tyron Woodley like it or not is not a true boxer at least not a proven one yet. What he does have that could prove to be one of his biggest advantages is his experience with mega fights. Thats something that can’t be fast tracked and cannot be learned until you’ve been put through the fire.
They’re both trying to enter the world of boxing and prove what they can do. Non boxers have historically struggled in the ring because wether people like it or not it is a different beast. Because the greats make it look easy people tend to forget the technical skill and advanced training that goes into the art of boxing. It’s not as easy as just throwing and landing punches. It requires stamina, technical training, and years of exposure and experience. You have to put in the work and there is no replacement or duplicate for it. You don’t become a boxer over night. You can’t pretend or play to box. You’re lack of experience your lack of stamina preparation lack of in the ring IQ or exposure will show its ugly head if you try to cut any corners.
I think the problem is we’ve become somewhat desensitized to the lack of unpredictability that the pre fight interviews or pressers bring to the fans. The pressers have become mundane and every fighter more often than not just seems to be going through the motions.
