Corey Buckner

As a young man, I spent my twenties in the social services providing youth Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug prevention in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Following that time of service, I moved on to do job development for people with disabilities on the South side of Chicago; where I partnered with employers to provide stable employment for individuals with varying disabilities. This provided them stable income, independence and empowered my clients to become more engaged and active in their communities. Having been involved in ministry throughout these ventures; I eventually moved into teaching and ministry in which I served in varying capacities including youth and junior high pastor, media ministry, assistant pastor and interim senior pastor at churches in the South Suburbs of Chicago.

Present day, I am active in the marketplace as the founder of Big Strong U where I train and coach people to reclaim their lives by taking control of their physical health. Additionally, I am a public speaker who works to encourage individuals to live their best lives possible by embracing their God-given purpose, diversity, cultural sensitivity and understanding, belief in God, disciplined devotion to our beliefs and the willingness to embrace things that challenge them and take them out of their comfort zone. I also encourage stronger communities and a better America by promoting strong families, the acceptance of peaceful diversity, civil debate, the destruction of nurture-based xenophobia and the facilitation of safe and open conversations on topics surrounding culture and race.

Bio: David Watson

My journey to a better self has been a long winding road. I have fought issues of depression, body image and many other things my whole adult life. This left me in a state where I was extremely emotionally reactive. Even after having 10 years of therapy, I still had not been able to stop getting out of my own way. The biggest thing I was battling was the sense I was alone in my pains, struggles and fears. Living in San Francisco, I was living in a bubble were most my friends were gay men. I knew a lot of them had similar struggles but, in my head, I was a man on an island. I was apprehensive to talk about them to a group of strangers. Weighing even more heavily on me was how was I going to relate to a bunch of straight dudes. However, after one Purposeful Brotherhood meeting, the trajectory of my life had been forever altered. I have come to realize I was selling everyone short. Through the brotherhood I found that most men are suffering from the same worries and challenges; regardless of their sexuality. Every brothers story is different, but the culmination of our life experiences is what allows us to help one another. You don’t have to walk a mile in a man’s shoes to show genuine empathy. This shift in thinking allowed me to become thought reactive rather than emotionally reactive. This was a paradigm shift for me and opened me up to so much more.

As my world expanded, I took the opportunity to invest in myself and committed to Clay’s Purpose Revealer program. It was here that I unlocked the key to my hang-ups. I had not defined my purpose. Purpose is who you are, not what you do. For some reason our society uses what you do as a measurement. My purpose is “To live with Honesty and Integrity so that I can Build Community and Share my Love with the World. Now, what I do feeds who I am and not the other way around.
