During the next 3 weeks, we’ll be more intentional about developing the habit of prayer by focusing on a different aspect of prayer each week. We want to inspire you to not be lukewarm, play-it-safe followers of Jesus, but people of faith who are bold and aren't afraid to praise and serve God boldly. As we see the depth of his prayers, we hope we will begin going places in our prayer life we've never been before or maybe haven't been for a long time.

At a restaurant, you expect to be served and waited on. Sometimes we take that same attitude into church - serve me, feed me! But spiritual growth and spiritual progress occurs more in the kitchen than at the table. The book of Acts is our example of how the early church served each other - together.

The early church as described in Acts 2 is an example of how to live in community with others. Church shouldn’t be a place where we go to ‘get’, but rather to discover how we can give and live with others. Church is a family, not a shopping mall.

After Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples ate, prayed, and lived together. That’s how God has hard-wired us - to live in community with other believers. When we meet together, let us encourage one another and challenge each other. We don’t come to church to be entertained, but to worship the Lord together.

The prison warden was overwhelmed by guilt when Paul, Silas, and the other prisoners didn’t immediately escape after the earthquake opened the prison doors. Earlier that day he’d shown no mercy when he beat Paul and Silas. Yet they stayed in the dungeon even when they had the chance to escape! The result was the complete conversion of the warden and his family.

We live in a time of being consumed with ‘self.’ But there seems to be something missing. What if the way to a better ‘me’ is a better ‘we.’ We’re hard-wired by God to exist in community. This week we’ll explore how we are better together.

Why should you be baptized? Jesus set the example by Himself being baptized. He commands His followers to his example as an outward expression of an inward change. Baptism shows our death to self and becoming alive to Christ.

The prison warden in Acts 16 is an example of repentance - turning away from his old way of life and heading to a new direction. True repentance says, “yesterday I beat these prisoners, and today I tend their wounds.” What a powerful story of true repentance.

When the prison guard in Acts 16 sees the prisoners he’s beaten and tortured are still in the dungeon, even after an earthquake hits and causes the doors to open, he asks the most important question any of us can ask: “What must I do to be saved?”

The story of the prison guard in Acts 16 is one of spiritual freedom and transformation. After beating Paul and Silas, an earthquake hit the prison, causing the doors to open. Rather than let the guard kill himself, Paul tells the man, “Stop! We are all still here.” In that moment of humility, the guard released his guilt and turned to Jesus.
