In the Gospel of Mark, today Gene tells us about the enormous, turbulent storm that raged around the boat holding Jesus and the disciples. While Jesus slept, the disciples cried out to God, “Don’t you even care?” Jesus wants us to cry out to him, because He is the only one who can carry us through the storm. He cares.

There’s nothing about us that God doesn’t know. Jesus knew all about the Samaritan woman’s past, which caused her to question where she could find God. Jesus answers her confusion by revealing Himself and the relationship only He can offer. In today’s episode, Gene shows us that it isn’t important where we worship, but Who we worship.

In the Gospel of John, we read about Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well in the middle of the day. She sees Jesus in a different light than what she’s used to. He speaks to her in a very personal and compassionate way. In today’s episode, Gene draws us to the message that Jesus has for us today - that the things we use to fulfill us still leave our souls thirsty. But He has an answer - living water.

“It is finished.” Jesus completed his earthly mission to pay the price for our sin. We don’t deserve a substitute like the one God provided, yet he loves us enough to allow us to stand blameless before him on the merits of the lamb of God who paid the price for us.

What a contrast between Peter’s cowardice in denying Jesus, and Jesus’ willingness to endure isolation, betrayal and ultimately death for the sake of those who could so quickly deny Him.

Jesus spent the last few hours of freedom in the garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane means “a place of crushing.” And it was in this very place that Jesus did the only thing He knew to do in those final hours of anguish -- He prayed

Jesus spent his last hours in the upper room with his beloved disciples and friends. He knew what was to come; betrayal and denial, yet he said, I know what you’ve done and what you’re about to do, and I still love you and accept you. He says the same to us today.

God instructed the Jews to select a perfect and spotless lamb for the annual Passover sacrifice. Their celebration was to remind them that God’s judgment passed over them when they were slaves. Jesus knew - but the crowds did not - he was the passover lamb as he entered Jerusalem. How quickly their cheering his entry would turn into cheering for him to be crucified.

In today’s episode, Gene asks us to consider what we would be willing to sacrifice our lives for. What matters most is the safety of our family, obedience to God, and concern for a spiritually lost person. Truly successful people learn to say no to those things that are not important, and yes to the things that matter most. Gene challenges us to avoid comparing ourselves and our success to others who seem to have more. Instead, we need to focus our eyes on Jesus and realize that He is the one who defines us.

Sometimes when we chase success, we think it’s okay to do whatever it takes to get to the goal. Success at work, achieving a milestone, or graduating with honors are all good goals, but they make lousy gods. Gene encourages us today to not become so obsessed with success that we compromise our values and morals. We need to realize that, if we are in Christ, we are already successful.
