Because light and darkness are universal experiences, biblical writers and even the Lord Himself often employed this pair of images to convey spiritual truth. In His words and His works Jesus demonstrated Himself to be the Son of God, yet most closed their eyes and stopped their ears. It wasn't a case of insufficent light, but a matter of choosing to remain in darkness. In this section Jesus makes it clear that if we're unable to see Him clearly, the problem lies with us and not Him.
