Pushing The Envelope: Music Decidedly Left Center

Greetings!

Well...in October I was back in Connecticut for my 50th high school reunion and on the way back I had to make my quarterly pilgrimage to the Princeton Record Exchange and load up, thus the title of today's program, an inquiry from my wife.

I was thrilled to find a bunch of CDs released on Foster Reed's wonderful New Albion label.  I've never been a completist about any label or artist, but I've been making a concerted effort to obtain the New Albion catalog due to their consistent high quality in terms of performances, composers and recording quality. While no longer producing new releases, they are available for digital download. Do check their catalog out. http://www.newalbion.com

Enjoy!

Greetings!

Lots of cool things this week with a focus on Ian Power's new release, "Ave Maria: Variations on a Theme by Giacinto Scelsi" which I felt could not be done justice by only playing a portion of it.  It's a fascinating look at how the briefest of melodies can be interpreted and re-interpreted in order to take on the melody from different perspectives.

In addition, we'll check out new releases from William Susman, Homebrewed Universe, The Owl, Joseph Bohgian and the Thin Edge New Music New Music Collective w/ Linda Caitlin Smith together w/ some older goodies.

Enjoy!

Greetings!

So, I'm in my car listening to Graham Fitkin's wonderful 2017 release, "Veneer", which explores, per GF, "the twisted moral fragility of our current celebrity-icon-tumbling era".

As the track, "I'm Such A Shallow Person" is displayed on the digital readout, I start to think that a show featuring tunes concerning flawed human character traits and/or behaviors might be an interesting.  Here it is.  I hope you do too!

Enjoy!

Greetings!

According to the folks at NationalDayCalendar.com, pianos not only get an International Piano Day on March 27th (the 88th day of the year, a wink to the piano’s 88 keys), but also a National Piano Month during September.

Therefore, today is a piano extravaganza with numerous new releases peppered with some excellent older chestnuts, including a "faux piano" piece cobbled together by yours truly.

Enjoy!

Greetings!

International Strange Music Day, celebrated annually on August 24, was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician and composer. The premise of the day is simple: to get people to play and listen to types of music they have never experienced before.

He believes that broadening people’s musical spectrums can also change the way that society looks at other aspects of life – his mantra is ‘listening without prejudice’.

It is that spirit which today's program honors.  Thank you, Patrick!
