Grief is an inevitable part of life, the loss and trauma isn't something that is easily overcome. We often think that death happens to an individual, when in reality, it happens to those who are left behind. In today's Qigong podcast, Richard Clegg discusses how he copes with grief and integrates the Zhineng Qigong practice to navigate his healing journey after losing his wife and grandson.
In grief, Richard emphasizes maintaining a sense of true self and wholeness. Qigong teaches that oneness is essential, as separation leads to suffering. Emotional healing after loss requires removing judgment and ego. Qigong encourages returning to objectivity—allowing emotions to naturally flow while being kind to ourselves through the stages of grief.
Grief brings overwhelming emotions that need processing. In Qigong, unresolved emotions create "heart-stones" - blockages that may lead to disease. During grief, self-care and self-love are vital. Allow yourself time and space to experience emotions rather than resist them. This increases self-awareness and reinforces identity, which helps counter the isolation that often accompanies grief.
Zhineng Qigong can help with trauma and grief. Richard specifically uses the La Qi and Chen Qi methods for grief. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, grief is associated with the lungs. Chen Qi clears blockages and opens energy pathways, allowing smooth Qi flow throughout the body. This benefits the lungs while strengthening the mind. Richard also used the 8 verses meditation to calm his nervous system.
Grief might be a frame of reference as Richard explains, though Qigong for grief allows both ourselves and others the freedom to experience loss without judgment or rushing.
