A 2019 Climate Transparency report revealed that almost 23 000 people die in South Africa every year as a result of outdoor air pollution: because of strokes, heart disease, lung cancer and chronic respiratory diseases, advising that South Africa will need to scale up climate action to meet the lower-end of its NDC [nationally determined contributions] in 2025 and 2030. We speak to members of the Climate Justice Coalition (CJC) a collective of members who’ve launched the campaign for a Green New Eskom, demanding a just transition to a more socially owned, renewable energy future, providing clean, safe, and affordable energy for all, with no worker and community left behind.
