In heel veel talen van de wereld – zoals het Nederlands – is één lettergreep in het woord gemiddeld wat langer, hoger en misschien luider dan de andere: de beklemtoonde lettergreep. Welke lettergreep dat is, verschilt per taal: soms de eerste, soms de een na laatste, soms de laatste. Bij nadere analyse blijkt er een betrekkelijk kleine hoeveelheid parameters te zijn die samen de ogenschijnlijk grote variatie in klemtoonsystemen tussen talen in de wereld inzichtelijk kan maken. Maar waar past het Nederlands in die typologie?
