  • S1 E15 - The Eiffel Tower

    The Eiffel Tower was built as the centerpiece of a giant fair or exposition held on Paris, France in 1889. The purpose of the exposition was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The tower was completed in just 17 months and named after the man who built it, Gustave Eiffel.

    Eiffel Tower had a height of 984 feet or 300 meters. But radio and television transmitter have increased that to 1,053 feet or 321 meters.

    When it was built in 1889 , it was widely criticized. Many people thought it is unsafe and ugly. Due to be demolished in 1909, it was saved because of its value as an antenna for radio transmission.

    It was the tallest building until 1930.

  • S1 E14 - Ayers Rock (Uluru)

    yers rock or Uluru is a single huge rock. It rises out of a desert in the middle of the Australian continent. It is the largest single rock anywhere in the world. It is a popular tourist attraction.

    It reaches a height of about 1,150 feet or 350 meters above the ground. The distance around it is about 6 miles or 10 kilometers.

    Ayers rock or Uluru stands higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris and is many times the size of the Great Pyramid in Egypt.

    Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. It has an area of just over a sixth of a square mile or 0.44 square kilometer. The Vatican is located in Rome, the capital of Italy. It has been an independent country since 1929.

    The current population of Vatican City, based on projections of the latest United Nations data. The UN estimates the July 1, 2020 population at 801. All citizens of Vatican City are Roman Catholic. The only people allowed to live in the Vatican city are clergy and the Swiss Guards.

  • S1 E12 - The Roman Collosseum


    The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, was built nearly 2,000 years ago. The ancient Romans came here to be entertained. They watched hand-to-hand fighting between specially trained men, called the gladiators and contest between men and wild animals.

    The ceremony that marked the Colosseum's opening in 80 AD included 100 days of games. Many men and animals lost their lives.

    The Colosseum, the largest and most important amphitheatre of Rome, was officially dedicated by the emperor Titus. However, it was the emperor Domitian who completed the structure two years later, in 82 AD., by adding the top storey.

  • S1 E11 - Mount Rushmore

    Happy Fourth of July... Here's a special podcast about one of America's greatest tourist destinations and one of its historical heritages.

    The faces of four of America's greatest presidents are carved into Mount Rushmore in South Dakota in the United States. They are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.

    The sculptor Gutzon Borglum began work on this mammoth project at Mount Rushmore in 1927. The entire project took more than 14 years to complete. Borglum himself did not live to see it finished, but his son Lincoln completed the project for him.

  • S1 E10 - The City Of Pompei

    Pompeii was an ancient city in Southern Italy. The city was well planned with orderly and paved streets. A wall surrounded the city. Public buildings included baths, two theatres and many temples.


    It was colonized by the Romans about 100 BC, though it had been a Roman ally at some point before that. Seventeen years prior to their destruction, Herculaneum and Pompeii had been badly damaged by an earthquake. Reconstruction was still in progress when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.

    Lava poured down the mountain side and hot volcanic ash flew out of the top of the mountain. Pompeii was covered with a layer of ash and lava about 20 feet or 6 meters.

    The people of Egypt put treasures of gold and other precious objects inside the pyramid. They believed that when someone died their body had to be preserved so that the soul could live forever.

  • S1 E8 - The Parthenon Part 2

    The Parthenon in Athens Greece was built over 2,400 years ago. The Greeks built this temple to honour the goddess Athena. They believed she was a goddess with special powers to protect the city of Athens from harm.

    The Parthenon is considered the pinnacle of Athenian architectural achievement. The huge columms of the Parthenon rise to a height of 32 feet or 10 meters. Each column is made from a number of round marble blocks piled one on top of the other. Metal or wood wedges were inserted in the centers of the blocks to keep them in place.
