Ayman Barbaresco was a remarkable member of our community as an advocate, volunteer, contributor, motivator, inspiration and friend.
Sadly we never got the chance to record Ayman’s Queer Island Discs with him, so instead this tribute plays the 8 songs he selected and tells some of his story through those that knew him.
It was an absolute honour to make this recording.
Thank you to:

This week we have Queer Island Discs from Perry, Kate of Clifton Hill, Andrew of Fitzroy and one from one of your QID hosts.
Thank you all for getting in touch, and letting us tell your stories and play your songs.

Our latest castagay is an exercise scientist, yogi, kirtan enthusiast and lover of sound.
Aleisha Leonard is passionate about our LGBTIQ+ community, and specifically about participation in inclusive health and exercise activities and the social connections that brings.
She also has a fascinating mix of music in her 8 Queer Island Discs; from songs inspired by her love of yoga and meditation, to a throwback to 90’s girl power, to a particularly romantic connection with English pop group Hot Chip.
Queer Island Discs airs Saturdays at 1pm on JOY 94.9.

Michelle Sheppard is the latest member of our community off to the Queer Island.
Momma Mish is well know for her work as a trans advocate in Australia for many years, but through 8 songs she took us back and told the story that got her to the place where she is now. Michelle held little back in a very honest and emotional musical journey.
THIS EPISODE OF QID CONTAINS SOME DISCUSSION OF ISSUES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & SUICIDE.

Co-founder of Melbourne Bisexual Network Ruby Mountford joined us in studio to share their Queer Island Disc.
Ruby’s songs tell the story of someone who had dealt with and worked through a lot in their almost 30 years. It also reveals someone who loves a bop!
Ruby sits on the Autism Spectrum Australia LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee. They are also the Communications and Administrations Officer at Pride Foundation Australia.

Jude Munro AO gave us a precious hour of her time, to tell us some of her story through the discs she will take to the Queer Island. She will also bring a shovel ?.
Some of her song choices connected with strong messages around social justice, and following in the footsteps of those who campaigned before us. Others were all about the emotion and talent of exceptional artists.
Jude Munro was one of the founding members of the Gay Liberation Movement in Melbourne in the 1970’s. Currently, she is the Chair of the Victorian Pride Centre.

We packed the Chair of the ILGA World Intersex Committee (and Hobsons Bay councillor) Tony Briffa off to the Queer Island with their songs, stories, and more.
Tony shared 8 song choices and the connection each has to significant personal and professional memories. They claim to be a big dag, but telling us their stories also revealed a hugely positive, joyful and inspiring intersex queer person. You can be all these things at once.
Queer Island Discs is a bit like Desert Island Discs, except the island isn’t deserted; it’s full with an LGBTI+ population!

JOY CEO Ange Barry joined us and shared 8 songs plus the queerest thing she owns, all to be shipped off to the Queer Island.
What did we learn about our boss during this hour?
That she has an eclectic taste in music, a strong connection with the UK and British music, and she laughs, a lot.
