Queering the Guillotine

New week, new chapters! We’re back to discuss the latest happenings in Weekly Shonen Jump, and boy do things get…questionable. There’s a lot of good and a lot of just plain “What?” this week. We share our queerpinions on:

Dr. STONE chapter 118

Double Taisei chapter 14

My Hero Academia chapter 240

The Promised Neverland chapter 147

Spoiler and content warning: We’re a fairly NSFW podcast that includes use of reclaimed homophobic slurs. Also, we spoil the hell out of all the chapters listed above and discuss prior events in the series as well.

Jump is back this week and so are we! We resume our discussions of the three series we’ve been following, as well as add Dr. STONE to our rotation. We share our queerpinions on:

Claude, Dimitri, and what you see not always being what you get

How lovable all the student characters are (except for Ingrid)

The game’s social link system and time mechanics

Sylvain and how to responsibly incorporate characters like him in fiction

Content warning: We’re a fairly NSFW podcast that includes use of reclaimed homophobic slurs. Spoiler-wise we don’t discuss much that isn’t already evident from the game’s trailers, promos, and first ten-ish hours of gameplay.

New week, new Jump! We share our queerpinions on:

We’re back back back back back again with our second Naruto episode! We pick back up where we left off in the Chunin exam and deep dive into our feelings, featuring our queerpinions on:

Temari, Kankuro, Shikamaru, and the Third Hokage

Gaara, Gaara, and more Gaara

The OG stunt queen Orochimaru

Shukaku’s design

More Gaara

We’re back with more New Chapter Chatter, where we share our reactions to the latest installments of the Shonen Jump manga we’re both following. This week we share our queerpinions on:

Double Taisei chapter 10

My Hero Academia chapter 236

The Promised Neverland chapter 143

Spoiler and content warning: We’re a fairly NSFW podcast that includes use of reclaimed homophobic slurs. Also, we spoil the hell out of all the chapters listed above and discuss prior events in the series as well. Basically, if you want to experience the story for yourself, save listening until you’ve caught up. Content-wise, it’s also worth noting that the chapters featured (and by extension our discussion of them) feature talk about genocide, abuse and abusers, and gory death. This was far from a week of lighthearted reads.

It’s a queer manga celebration as we discuss two recent series about young queer people just trying to find their place in the world. We share our queerpinions on:

Yuhki Kamatani’s Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare

Okura and Coma Hashii’s That Blue Sky Feeling

Nuanced representations of high school queerness

Relatable queer narratives and characters

Basically, if you want to experience the story for yourself, save listening until you’ve caught up.

We’re back with another new episode, and this time we’re discussing what’s unquestionably going to be our anime of the year: Sarazanmai! Plus, we have our first guest, Karla, on the show to join us on our yokai feelings train. We share our queerpinions on:

Sarazanmai

Kappas

Gay otter cops

Tropes of disability in media

Effective foreshadowing

The “bury your gays” trope

The theme music (spoiler warning: it slaps)

Content warning: We’re a fairly NSFW podcast that includes use of reclaimed homophobic slurs. Also, we discuss the entirety of Sarazanmai, up through and including its literal ending credits, so don’t listen until you’re ready to have literally everything spoiled.
