  • Being in a Groove vs Being in a Rut.
What is the difference between being in a grove and being in a rut? Can you move from one to the other?

It seems like a pretty straightforward answer. But when Stewart Wiggins, Karen Loomis and I got into it, we realized there was some nuisance there.

We decided a groove can turn into a rut but not the other way around.

Do you agree or disagree with us?

  • How do you handle ambush conversations?
An ambush conversation is when someone “grabs” you to talk about something important when you are in the middle of something; between meetings (on the way to the bathroom is a favorite in the office) or when you aren’t ready to have the conversation.

An ambush conversation often results in saying “yes” when you should have and would have said “no” if your brain had had a chance to think.

Listen in as Abigail McCloskey, Bill Lindquist, Rick Alcantara, and I share how we deal with people who "grab" us for a "quick second" and admit that we are often the ones doing the ambushing.

  • Does having big goals steal today‘s happiness?
When focused on a really big outcome goal it is easy to forget to enjoy today. I posed this dilemma to Catherine Daley, Kristin Bainger and Simon Coles. They had very different takes on how to approach it, if they even thought it was an actual problem.

  • When over achievement becomes expected
It happens without you realizing it. You stay late to finish a project. You take an early morning meeting to accommodate someone in a different time zone. You pick up extra work when a coworker goes out sick. Suddenly you realize you are working ninety-hour weeks and are exhausted.

You try to talk to your boss but they aren't much help. As you try to get stuff off of your plate people start complaining that you aren't don't your job. You are no longer seen as an overachiever. Working yourself to death has become expected. Now what?

Listen in as Wayne Buckhanan, Karen Loomis, Simon Coles and I discuss this slippery slope and how you might get out of it.

  • The dark side of grit & resilience
Knowing when to turn it off. Have you every stuck with something WAY longer than you should have? Relationships, jobs, businesses that aren't working. There is A LOT of content about how to build grit and resilience. There are even Quick Hits about it (https://youtu.be/MP4ksq7Q34Y, https://youtu.be/xVDs480ubmo).

But something that is rarely (basically never) talked about is the dark side, sticking with something too long, pounding your head against a wall rather than looking for a door.

Listen in as Steve Thomson, James H. Lee, Bill Lindquist and I talk about our experience (particularly me) with taking grit and resilience too far and how we catch ourselves doing it.

  • You can‘t outsource focus. How do you get yourself to do it?
How your brain gets into focused mode is likely different then someone else. For some people 20-40 minutes is all they can do. For others they need to set aside more time so once they get into the flow they aren't pulled out of it.

Listen in as Sara Oblak Speicher, Bill Lindquist, Rowley Maggs and I talk about how we get and stay focused when we need to.

  • How to say ”no” without being seen as lazy or not a team player
The busier you are the more likely it is that someone will want to pile more on your plate, particularly if you are the type of person who says "yes" (or says no and then ends up doing it anyway).

Kristin Bainger, Karina Hulstrom and Wayne Buckhanan joined me to discuss how to say "no" and make it stick without being judged negatively for it.

How do you balance your workload while still being seen as a team player?

How do you manage the discontentment between excellence and perfection?
