Quiggin Report #11 - Dawah At City Council: The Enemy At The Gate

The second annual Iftar dinner, marking the breaking the fast of Ramadan, was held at Toronto City Hall on 29 May 2018 at approximately 9 in the evening.

It is interesting that the Toronto City Hall would allow this to happen, as it appears to be a clear violation of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling on exactly this sort of issue. The Supreme Court decision, based on a city hall case in Quebec, ruled that the state must be neutral and “This neutrality requires that the state neither favour nor hinder any particular belief.”

All of this would be interesting in itself, but there is an ironic side to this story as well. Clearly written into the invitation to the event and with a large poster in City Hall Chambers is Islamic Relief Canada. The large poster was in the centre of the podium where it could not be missed. The power point type presentation, up during the speech of Councillor Shan, also features the Islamic Relief Canada logo.

When the government in the UK began serious investigations into the curriculum of many Islamic schools, the results were frightening. Books advocating the _stoning of women_ (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2018/01/16/islamic-primary-school-had-books-written-banned-extremist-ofsted/) were but one small example of a much larger problem. In addition, _lashing and execution_ (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2018/01/16/islamic-primary-school-had-books-written-banned-extremist-ofsted/) were advocated in book used in a variety of schools. Other books available to children included _The Ideal Muslim_ by Dr Muhammad Ali Al-Hashimi, which advocates parents hitting children if they do not pray by the age of 10.

Should we allow our public school systems to regress and import a 6th Century Salafist interpretation of Islam that forces girls to the back of the room while only boys are allowed to spread? Or should our schools continue an increasingly secular path as they have done for decades?

Dr. Tarkek Loubani is an emergency physician from London, Ontario. He has worked overseas before in Tanzania and in conflict zones such as Iraq and southern Lebanon. He is a Palestinian but was born in Kuwait before moving to Canada. His father, Mahmoud Loubani, is also a doctor.

In addition to working at the London Health Sciences Centre (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/tarek-loubani-shot-gaza-1.4663694), Dr Tarek Loubani is also an also an associate professor at the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich Medicine & Dentistry School (http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/about/news/2018/may/dr_tarek_loubani_update.html). Of note, in addition to his positions in Canada, he also is an emergency physician at the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. It is curious to note that of the ten known major hospitals in Gaza, Dr. Tarek Loubani happens to work at the one that has a series of close associations to Hamas. According to a Washington Post report (http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/08/01/finnish-tv-reporter-at-gazas-al-shifa-hospital-its-true-that-rockets-are-launched-here-from-the-gazan-side-into-israel-video/) in 2014, the al-Shifa Hospital "has become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices."

Perhaps Prime Minister Trudeau’s idea for an investigation into the whole event is not such as bad idea. Would such an investigation in Canada reveal other doctors who have supported fund raising for terrorism? Are any of them close to Tarek and Mahmoud Loubani?

On the 8th March 2014, Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 was lost while flying a regularly scheduled flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing China. The aircraft has never been found and no trace exists of any of the 12 crew or the 227 passengers. How anyone can lose a massive airliner in this day and age remains perhaps the greatest single aviation mystery of this century.

Is there a political angle to this story? Was the involvement of the pilot with a major Muslim Brotherhood leadership figure a factor?

How does someone like President Trump, President Putin or President Xi Jinping, run a country and/or a war if the entire civilian and military population is constrained and weakened before the war even starts?

In the past, the American President, for instance, could count upon a military backed by a highly capable civilian population. What if that civilian population effort simply disappears?

How, you ask, could that disappear and how could you cripple a country before a war even starts? This problem is not new, nor is it an imaginary one.

Tick-Tock, the Iran Deal deadline looms. President Trump will deal with Iran and its nuclear weapons program can be gained from examining how he dealt with North Korea. This is more than just an academic interest. North Korea and Iran have exchanged technology programs and have actively sought to assist each other in weapons programs. The leadership of both countries want nuclear weapons for a variety of reasons – but regime security and leadership survival are at the top.

Iran is a theocratic dictatorship. It is literally one of the worst countries in the world to live in when you look at human rights issues, the justice system or any type of personal freedom. Women have been crushed into submission and gays are murdered by the state.

The use of criminal laws to silence dissent is increasing in Canada. This is especially true if you criticize the Government of Ontario. This “democratic” government will use the force of criminal law to silence if you if you question their policies.

Two recent cases highlight the problem. They stand in sharp contrast to where multiple other charges should have been laid but were not. The bias by the government in these cases is clear.

In one case, Joseph Porco of Ontario was charged with mischief for writing “no more Muslims” on benches in bus shelters (https://www.durhamregion.com/news-story/7569726-oshawa-man-jailed-five-months-for-anti-muslim-graffiti-at-bus-stops/). He was convicted and sentenced to five months in jail. In sentencing, Mr Justice Ferhan Javed said. “It does not matter that he wasn’t charged with a specific hate crime, because this was a hate crime disguised as mischief (https://www.durhamregion.com/news-story/7569726-oshawa-man-jailed-five-months-for-anti-muslim-graffiti-at-bus-stops/).” Joseph Porco has been diagnosed with a delusional disorder with persecutory features. His mental health may have been a factor in his behaviour, “but I simply can’t be sure of this,” the judge said. The judge also added: “There can be no other rational inference to be drawn except that he targeted a segment of the community based on religious grounds.” Mr. Porco’s message was both hateful and hurtful to the community and needs to be deterred.”

If you wonder why politicians make some outrageous and obviously inaccurate statements about peaceful Islamists immediately after a terrorist attack, the following example occurring now in Canada will help explain why. The left side of the political spectrum is completely infected by this phenomenon as we saw in the Obama administration’s regular meetings with Muslim Brotherhood front groups such as CAIR USA, itself listed as a terrorist group. Now CAIR USA is also trying to influence conservative parties who tend to be far more skeptical and are much more difficult to infiltrate. But the Islamists are persistent and will continue to do this until we have legislation making these Islamist extremist front groups, with their cartel like structures, illegal and expose them for who they are.

The politicization of oversight agencies and the imposition of demands by politicians attempting to enforce a social justice warrior ethos is impacting police services.

It is crushing the concept of pro-active policing and compounds the problems already faced by police.

This is a serious problem as it is corroding the most basic principle of society – the social contract.

In short, the citizens give up the right to use arbitrary violence against their fellow citizens. In turn, only the government has the right to use violence, but it agrees to provide safety and security for the citizens. Today means the government agrees to provide a functioning police service.
