I recently read Stanisław Lem’s short story Non-Serviam, and what’s interesting about it is that it doesn’t actually argue about whether God exists. It asks something much more uncomfortable. What if God is real, reachable, and perfectly capable of explaining himself, and simply chooses not to.

This particular short story can be found in his collection of short stories titled A Perfect Vacuum. Which consisted of reviews of nonexistent books. Non Serviam appears towards the end. Lem presents the story as a dry, fictional academic review of a book on personetics by a man named Professor James Dobb. Personetics, the science of creating sentient beings called personoids within machines.

Stanisław Lem himself was not religious and he was openly skeptical of the idea that morality requires a transcendent authority. That position is not hidden or ambiguous in this short story. Lem approaches God as a logical proposition under uncertainty, not as a being owed obedience, love, or gratitude, and he carries that stance straight into the story. When the personoids’ refuse to ground ethics in fear of punishment or hope of reward this to me is Lem’s way of showing his own conviction.

The long shot hope of the Staircase Project was that by sending Yun Tianming to the Trisolarans, he might somehow obtain critical information about the Trisolarans' society, their weaknesses, or their invasion strategy. Even though Tianming was effectively being sent into enemy territory, the hope was that, as a captured and potentially revived human, he could gather intelligence that would help Earth prepare a better defense or devise a counter-strategy.
The Staircase Project was a high-risk, last-ditch attempt to do something, anything, that might offer a glimmer of hope for survival. Even if the project didn’t directly lead to a solution, it was at least an attempt to send a message to the universe that humanity wouldn’t give up without trying every possible avenue.

Ultimately the Staircase project does not go as planned. The launched brain falls off course. For Centuries the Staircase Project was thought to be a failure. Until year 7 of the Broadcast Era, a dark time for humankind. In the era Human had been exposed to the wider universe, The world of Trisolaris had already been annihilated, Earth was next. This was of course due to the Dark Forest State of the universe, which rendered the cosmos a hostile place to all intelligent life which revealed itself. Here we learn that at some point the Trisolarans had in fact intercepted the Staircase Project, they found Tianming’s Brain, and rebuilt his body. They had been studying him, learning from him. It was because of his brain that they had been able to pull off the devastating droplet attack, which destroyed the entirety of mankind’s space force.

He was also responsible for the boom in art and stories from Trisolaris, much of this had helped to humanize the Trisolarans in the eyes of humankind during the Deterrence Era. Due to Tianming the Trisolarans were able to utilize deception. As the hour grows late for Earth and our Solar system, the Trisolarans out of respect for Tianming allow him to communicate with Cheng Xin. But the communication will be monitored by the Trisolarans. Tianming will not be allowed to tell her anything that could potentially help humanity. The Trisolarans still viewed humankind as a threat and would rather they did not survive. Tianming however still feels resigned to help humankind, and the woman he has always loved from afar, Cheng Xin. In the form of fairytales Tianming would attempt to convey to humanity the secret’s for surviving in the universe, within the Dark Forest. Tianming tells three fairy tales and Cheng Xins listens very carefully, The New Royal Painter, The Glutton’s Sea, and Prince Deep Water.

The Three-Body Problem series is one of the best trilogies of science fiction books that I’ve read in recent years, but in this video, we will be discussing its spinoff, Redemption of Time. Redemption of Time was written by Baoshu, and continues the storyline of the Three-Body Problem universe. It mainly follows the character Tianming, the only character in the original series to ever make direct contact with the Trisolarans. Redemption of Time describes his time among the Trisolarans and how he was visited by a powerful entity that gave him knowledge about the nature of the universe. In this video, we will mainly discuss the nature of the original universe and how it began to collapse. In Redemption of Time we learned that the original, 10-dimensional universe before it began to collapse was constructed upon energy exchange between photons, it was a universe of light.

The universe is incomprehensibly vast. Earth is an unprotected bubble surrounded in infinite cosmic emptiness. Within that darkness, that eternal blackness who knows what might wait, and what eventually might call out to us. The Lie Behind The Star, follows the Waanzilishi, a civilization who deep within caverns of the earth discovered strange pulsating mushrooms, mushrooms which they grew to understand were actually reacting to something remote, very remote. The bioluminescent mushrooms were somehow responding to a distant signal from outer space, undetectable through normal means. The consumption of the Mushrooms brought visions of the cosmos, a wealth of outside knowledge. At night under the influence of the mushrooms they would dance wildly beneath the earth illuminated by the thousands upon thousands of pulsating fungi, filled with the music of the universe.

As time went on the attachment between the Waanzilishi and the mushrooms grew stronger. Some among them claimed that they could themselves hear the call of the signal, which they named the Kimora. In time three children would be born, The Waanzilishi, using what they have learned, changed the children somehow, made them a part of the fungal network, they became, The Three Who Are One. By directly linking into the fungal network they could manipulate it, initiate its growth, use it to produce chemicals, and biological substances of all kinds. The Three Who are One were granted by the fungus near unending life, around them eventually grew an immense city all formed from the biological matter of the fungus. It was said that the Three Who are One could hear the Kimora at all times, that their purpose was guided by the Kimora and the Kimora alone.

The Waanzilishi prospered and grew, advancing themselves, technologically, philosophically, and intellectually whilst simultaneously the Kimora took on heavily mystical and religious significance. Many believe that the Kimora, was the voice of a Goddess, that the Waanzilishi were her chosen people. To the Waanzilishi, the Adjeki, the outsiders played no role, they were not chosen by Kimora. Eventually it became the mission of the Waanzilishi to find their goddess. The Three who are one declared that those who heard the Kimora most strongly would be taken as children and trained for a mission, a mission they may never return from, aboard a biological vessel they would leave the earth, and seek her out.
