It’s Aotearoa Spanish language week! People are celebrating in a myriad of different ways, from learning a couple of sentences, trying to cook some Spanish or Latin American cuisine to attending one of the many cultural events across Aotearoa.

You might not think there’s much of a connection between Spain, Latin America and Aotearoa, but Aotearoa is home to over 25,000 Latin Americans and Spanish people, especially in large urban areas such as Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Dr Moira Fortin Cornejo from the University of Otago Department of Language and Culture says the Aotearoa Spanish language week will provide an excellent opportunity for New Zealanders to learn more about Latin American and Spanish cultures beyond cultural staples such as the fiesta.

We spoke with Dr Cornejo about what the Aotearoa Spanish language week means for Spanish and Latin-American New Zealanders, latin culture’s traces in Aotearoa, and what could happen next.

From 11 to 12 am on Friday the 19th of August, The New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union stepped off the job to advocate for better pay, staffing conditions, and health concerns for professional firefighters in Aotearoa. The strike action took place in 19 different towns and cities across the country with support from volunteers, families, friends and the public.

We spoke with President of the Dunedin Local NZ Professional Firefighters Union Antony Mason, live from the Willow bank Fire Station about the strike, why the NZPFU has taken to the extreme of a work stoppage, and what has to be done to sustain this fundamental service and the wellbeing of firefighters in Aotearoa.
