The Fair Pay Agreements Bill is being lauded by some for its potential to improve conditions and wages for workers - will the bill actually have this effect?

The bill in question passed its first reading in early April and is currently going through a select committee. it's intended to provide better working conditions and pay for workers by allowing unions to establish fair pay agreements with employers with the hope of establishing industry-specific minimum pay standards.

We speak to Melissa Ansell Bridges (secretary of the NZ Council of Trade Unions) about whether the Bill in its current form will have this effect, and its impacts on the ability of workers to strike during an FPA negotiation.

Today on Business as Usual with Trent Smith (Department of Economics, University of Otago) we talked about Public Holidays trade restrictions as well as transparency around tax for high income earners.

With the introduction of Matariki as a statutory holiday this June, there will now be 11 public holidays in Aotearoa. National Party Leader Christopher Luxon claims that another public holiday will create further economic strain on business in the country. We asked Trent Smith about the economic and social impacts of public holidays.

Revenue Minister David Parker said earlier this week that Aotearoa should have a more transparent taxation system so people have a better understanding of how much tax the highest earners are paying. Trent talks to us about the issue of transparency in tax as well as alternative way of structuring tax systems

The New Zealand High Court has ruled against the Ministry of Health, finding the MIQ lottery system unjust in individual cases. Newly announced sex education resources from the MOH are contentious and have sparked discussion about the state of sex and consent education in NZ.
